As a regional director for the National Geographic Society, your primary responsibility will be to ensure that NGS increases its overall impact in the education space within your region. You will oversee disbursement of funds and identify resources for strategic oversight of goals in your region to support the brand, value and overall impact of the National Geographic Society in your region. Region five consists of VA, WV, MD, DE, DC, PA, NY, NJ, CT, MA, RI, VT, NH, ME. Travel is required throughout the region and additional travel will also be required throughout the United States. Additionally, you will direct activities reflecting the needs and opportunities in your multi-state area and align current and future programs of NGS with unmet needs and new opportunities. In so doing, you will develop relationships with civic, business and educational leaders as well as potential delivery partners. Primarily, the work will focus on the educational mission of the National Geographic Society to empower students and educators to understand the world for a healthier and more sustainable future.

The Regional Director of Region 5 must be a resident of Massachusetts.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The position supervises all staff, contractors and volunteers within the region.  This includes        oversight of all aspects of productivity including but not limited to:

  • Implementation of Programs and Initiatives: Develop strategy and action plans for integrating comprehensive, large and active regional/state-based outreach programs aligned to the mission and goals of the National Geographic Society. Monitor state and regional trends that will impact the development of strategies for National Geographic in the regional and in person community efforts.
  • Oversight of Operations: Direct programs and funding for regional activities in alignment and in coordination with the National Geographic Society. Oversight of staff and contractors.
  • Talent Development & Relationships: Create close connections between the National Geographic national staff andNational Geographic explorers, grantees and educators at the state and regional level incorporating the goals of the National Geographic Society. Build relationshipswith external organizations, the National Geographic Family (NGP, Cengage, and other branded NG activities or programs) and other communities or organizations who could support and join the mission of the National Geographic Society. 
Skills/Experience: 

Minimum Education Required

  • Undergraduate required, Master’s preferred

Minimum Type and Years of Experience

  • 5+ years in leadership, administration, strategy development and project management
  • 3+ years of network or regional administration/management and prior staff management experience

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills with a high attention to detail; self-direction and motivation; sensitivity to deadline-driven workflow; ability to strategies and handle a variety of projects with changing priorities in a dynamic environment. Stellar written, verbal, and digital communication skills; collaborative, team-oriented work style. Strong research and accounting skills. Knowledge of digital and print media production and publication. Proficiency in Office suite; familiarity with content management and customer relations management systems, database design and management, web analytics tools, technology proficiency and project management tools a plus.
