National Geographic Society seeks a Survey Research Methodologist to join its Measurement & Evaluation team. The Survey Research Methodologist will lead development of all data collection instruments, including creating custom scales and indexes, to inform our evaluation efforts particularly around developing capacity. The successful candidate is highly analytical, a quick study, and well-versed in survey theory, psychometrics, and research methods. This position requires an individual who can translate research needs into a series of well worded questions and statements with great ease.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Develop/review data collection instruments, and ensure quality of data compiled and analyzed (30%)
- Develop and pilot custom scales and indexes based on directs from identified research projects (30%)
- Conduct psychometric/statistical analyses to validate instruments and analyze results (30%)
- Advise internal teams on research design, sampling, and data collection (10%)
Skills/Experience:
Minimum Education Required
- Master’s degree, PhD preferred, in survey methodology, research methodology, psychometrics, psychology, statistics, or related field with focus on survey or quantitative research.
Minimum Years & Type of Experience
- 8+ years of experience in survey-based research, preferably in social science. Experience with scale development required.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
- Significant knowledge in scale development and extensive experience in item response theory, Rasch modeling, generalizability theory, multiple regression, MANOVA, MANCOVA, discriminant analysis, etc.
- Strong proficiency in multivariate statistics and use of statistical packages (R, STATA, etc)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including solid command of grammar and usage
- Ability to develop highly customized questionnaires that are logical and engaging
- Proven experience in developing and implementing varied research designs
- Proven ability to work well on multiple assignments independently and collaboratively in a results-oriented environment
- Experience with and expertise in qualitative research methods a plus
- Knowledge/coursework in evaluation a plus
