We are looking for a dynamic and dedicated Director of Camping who, under the general guidance of the Chief Executive Officer and in collaboration with the camp team, will oversee and lead the business operations (budget size of $1.3 million) and programs of YMCA Camp Roger, YMCA Camp Mill Hollow, and two summer day camps on a year-round basis.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Director of camping oversees the management of program quality, facilities, volunteer and staff development, fundraising and collaborations with community agencies in meeting the needs of its program participants. The Director of Camping is responsible for overseeing, facilitating, and running safe, well-supervised, enriching, fun, positive, welcoming and nurturing camp atmospheres. The Director of Camping ensures youth participants are safe, secure and have fun while helping youth to develop skills that help them become successful adults and citizens. This person supervises three full-time staff - one office manager/registrar, and two full-time camp directors and 50-80 seasonal staff. The Director of Camping will be in charge of operating and residing at one of our resident camps during the summer months.

Skills/Experience: 

Education Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in recreation, education, psychology, or equivalent. Master Degree preferred.

Previous Work Experience: Five or more years previous experience in directing youth and family programs in a resident camp setting (preferably the YMCA). Experience in program development and implementation; facility management; master planning (operations and facilities; staff recruitment, selection, supervision and training; customer service and partnership relations; working witb youth, teens and families marketing and public relations; team building; values and education; and program evaluation. YMCA Senior Director status preferred.

Computer Proficiencies:  Experience with Google platform (Gmail, Calendar, Google Docs), internet, as well as reporting and registration platforms.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated skills in planning, time management, flexibility, organization and independent work proficiency. Strong interpersonal, supervisory and leadership skills. Excellent communication skills and ability to lead large groups. Cultural awareness and competency in cross-cultural practice. Ability to manage relationships, group facilitation and data collection. Must have good interpersonal and communication skills and be sensitive, adaptable, professional and articulate when dealing with others. Must be able to work autonomously within the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Organized and manages time well; reliable and dependable. Willing to become certified to drive company vehicles as needed. Spanish speaking and writing a plus.
