Position Description and Board Expectations:
The Odessa Family YMCA Board of Directors is actively seeking a visionary leader who can take us to the next level and continue to serve the community through new and existing childcare centers and health and wellness initiatives within the YMCA for all residents of Odessa. The YMCA seeks to be at the center of community life as a leading provider of youth programs, and health and wellness services in the Permian Basin.
The CEO will be uniquely positioned to champion the YMCA mission and develop partnerships to meet the needs of a diverse and evolving population. Building upon and expanding partnerships is a key focus for the future work of the YMCA.
Qualified candidates must have a solid business acumen, sound judgment and exceptional leadership skills. They must have a proven track record that demonstrates an ability to successfully improve finances and fundraising efforts, implement and promote the YMCA’s services and activities to the community; assess community needs and develop programs in partnership with others to meet those needs; raise funds; develop and manage a staff; and work with a YMCA board that focuses on strategic issues.
Salary Range: $80,000 - $90,000 range annualized. Commensurate with experience.
Benefits: Retirement contribution (3% paid by employee and 5% paid by the YMCA), vacation plan, health plan, relocation reimbursement, and other benefits per personnel policy included.
YMCA Association Facts
History: The facility was opened in September of 1969 with the support of businesses and individuals from the community.
Mission: Our mission is for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
YMCA Service Area and Locations: We serve Odessa, Monahans, Andrews, Crane, Goldsmith, and Pecos communities. Odessa is one of the largest cities in the region with a population of over 100,000.
Facilities: The main facility includes the Central YMCA Learning Center, locker rooms, fitness center, swimming pools, racquetball courts, weight room, and cardio room. Other facilities include the Joe Pinner West YMCA Learning Center and Joe Rutledge South YMCA Learning Center.
Membership: Membership of over 2,944 members and 2022 units with diversity that matches that of the service area. Over 35% of service area utilizes the YMCA through membership or programs. Our scholarship program for membership and programs ensures no one is ever turned away for an inability to pay. Membership category breakdown is 42% Adult, 2% Youth, 46% Family, and 10% Seniors.
Programs and Services: Programs offered at the YMCA include, Personal Trainers, Swim Aquatics, Youth Sports, Group Fitness, Y Camp and Youth Cheer.
Staff: In addition to the CEO position, there are 42 full time staff, 101 part time staff. The CEO supervises eight direct reports that include a CFO, Membership Director, Custodial Supervisor, Youth Sports Director, Health & Wellness Admin Director (Aquatics Supervisor, Cardio and Weight room, Fitness Centers, Aerobics), Central Daycare Director, Joe Pinner Daycare Director, Joe Rutledge Southside Director, and Maintenance staff.
Volunteers: The YMCA is led and supported by 180 volunteers, including its board of directors (13). The board of directors includes, 5 Hispanic, 8 Caucasians, 2 Women, and 11 Men that reflect the following age range: 5 in their 50’s,3 in the 30’s range, 5 in the 40’s. Members also include 4 Business owners, 2 Bankers, 7 UTPB staff, HR staff, a CEO, Ector County staff, Oil field, electrical and marketing fields.
Financial: The fiscal year runs from January to December. Revenues: $ $3,561,121 (30% from membership, 33%from programs, 32% from grants, and 5% from other).
Annual Campaign Support: We currently do not have an annual campaign.
Community: Odessa is a wonderful place to live, work and visit. With a population over 100,000, the city offers a variety of recreational activities, shopping and entertainment. Located in the Permian Basin, Odessa was founded in 1881 as a water stop and cattle-shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway. Odessa was established in 1881 as a railroad construction campsite on the Texas and Pacific Railroad. The actual chartering of Odessa as a town did not occur until 1886. The original town site contained only 300 acres comprising about 78 platted blocks, which continue to be the central part of the community today. Odessa’s main industry is oil and gas.

Key Deliverables:
• Advocate the YMCA Vision Within the Community: Serve as ambassador for the mission, goals and values of the YMCA. Lead efforts with increasing membership and delivering high quality programs to the community. Actively interact and communicate with the communities in the region as a representative of the YMCA. Represent the YMCA’s mission to community leaders, donors, staff and volunteers. Assure existing strong partnerships are fostered, and new partnerships are created. Create a culture of excellence within the YMCA, and act as an ambassador for the mission and vision for the YMCA within the community. Be seen and respected as a leader within the community, while proactively creating collaborations to enhance outreach and program initiatives.
• Prepare and Manage the Budget: Use a high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stability while consistently leading the organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions, and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders on the successful financial operation of their areas of responsibility. Monitor the budget closely to address competition that may impact membership, facility needs, and anticipate impact on revenue and expenses related to upkeep and maintenance.
• Improve Operating Performance: Work with the board to develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives. Remain fully informed of all operational issues, and have the keen ability to quickly address any issues that might arise as well as forecast future needs.
• Develop and Manage the Staff Team: Develop and manage a staff team. The YMCA seeks a “servant leader” who can inspire a positive attitude and building a cohesive team. The new CEO will create a plan to build unity, encourage teamwork, set operational goals tied to a strategic plan, hold staff accountable, and foster individual staff development. Lead by example; remain actively engaged in staff development and performance leading to superior results in programs, member satisfaction and community engagement. Evaluate current strengths and weaknesses of all key staff and create a plan to integrate members and program participants.
• Establish and Maintain a Culture: Continue to strengthen a culture of inclusion, integrity, character and life-long learning within the YMCA organization that reinforces, encourages, and promotes values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
• Be Visible within the YMCA: Constantly interact with members and volunteers, and be willing to provide assistance in functional areas that require support.
Additional Key Priorities:
• Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Have the ability to work effectively with volunteers, key staff, and the YMCA of the USA Resource Director, to create and develop a strategic roadmap that addresses opportunities and challenges related to the community’s support of facilities and programs, with defined organizational strategies. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in creating and aligning committees and their charts of work to support the strategies and goals of the association. Implement a strategic plan that will support the immediate needs of the YMCA.
• Lead Fundraising Efforts: Establish a plan for attaining the YMCA's annual fundraising goals and take the campaign to new levels of engagement with members, volunteers and donors. Develop and implement fundraising plans which will establish this Y as a leading charitable organization within the community, as well as meet the needs of this association. Important fiscal goals include a balanced budget, development of specialized campaigns to support the current day-to-day operations, development of a maintenance reserve, the securing of grants through grant-writing, implementation of a planned giving program, and growth of endowment funds. Fundraising plans will meet current and future needs of the association while building a culture of philanthropy among the board and staff. The CEO will be asked to take a leadership role in meeting objectives of community collaborative initiative that includes funded resources, over the next three years.
• Drive Membership and Enhance Programming: Implement a plan to increase the number of members and add value to our membership services by focusing on adult wellness programming. Membership plan should include strategies to recruit, engage and retain members that will be adopted by YMCA staff and promoted by volunteers. Successfully promote the YMCA’s services and activities to the community. Enhance and develop new adult programming making the YMCA the preferred provider within the community. Continue to engage, as well as retain, current members and cultivate new membership to the YMCA. With membership as a priority, ensure that high quality programs are delivered to support engagement beyond membership services. Continue the delivery of successful youth programs while identifying a strategy to utilize the aquatic center as a program opportunity.

Work with the board to establish an ongoing implementation plan for each major strategic initiative, and a process to monitor results and capital planning to address existing facili
Minimum Criteria for Candidates:
- Accredited 4-year college degree.
- Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
- Must have the ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
- Have the ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered, for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.
- A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management.
Preferred Criteria for Candidates:
- YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. If the candidate does not possess this, they must obtain it within 3 years from the date of hire.
- Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
- Fiscally sound business management approach.
- Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
- A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management more than $500,000 annually.
