The West End YMCA is seeking an experienced leader to join our team as Director of Operations.


The Director of Operations has a primary responsibility to activate the Association’s strategic vision by implementing the strategic plan and its principal goals, thereby developing operational plans to fulfill the vision of the CEO and Board for greater impact in our communities. This position has the leadership responsibility for the Association’s strategic direction, financial stability, communication, staff development and organization assets. The Director of Operations is responsible for the implementation of strategic initiatives, staff and volunteer development, and must work effectively with community stakeholders.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Works with the President/CEO, board of directors, and committees to provide direction for implementing and achieving the goals set forth in the strategic plan, and annual operating plans for all the branches and Association office, in alignment with the Association plan.
  • Works collaboratively with the President/CEO to implement the actions that will achieve the strategic objectives of the Association.
  • Leads and directs staff and volunteers in the development, implementation, and delivery of all programs and initiatives.  Maintains a strategic focus while ensuring operational effectiveness including budgetary goals and impact. 
  • Responsible for the implementation and management of operational budgets to ensure budgetary goals are achieved.  Works with all staff teams to control expenses and increase efficiencies. 
  • Leads all membership sales, programs, and practices, including special events programs.
  • Leads and directs operations of facilities, programs, policies and practices, including membership and special events programs.
  • Provides leadership, guidance and development to Directors and Leaders to effectively manage teams of staff and volunteers. 
  • Identifies and maintains effective succession strategies to ensure the next generation of cause-driven leaders are ready for leadership.
  • Oversees the development and administration of Association facility plans. 
  • Gathers and evaluates market trends and develop effective marketing and communications strategies to promote Y initiatives, programs, and benefits.
  • Works with President/CEO to develop and implement fundraising strategies. 
  • Serves as a member of Y management and supports the overall objectives and the mission of the YMCA.
  • Represents the YMCA at all times and maintains appropriate relationships with area organizations, community leaders, and businesses
Skills/Experience: 
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, human services or related area.
  • Five or more years broad management experience, preferably in the YMCA and/or not-for-profit sector, including strategic planning, board and volunteer development, philanthropic development, and multi-site operations.
  • Two years or more experience at a multi-branch level position including long range planning, volunteer, community and program development. 
  • YMCA Multi-Branch Leader certificate required within three years from date of hire.
  • Insight and skill to effectively lead a voluntary, not-for-profit organization within a complex internal and external environment.
  • Demonstrated operational experience in community relations, financial development, fiscal management, and board and volunteer development.
  • Ability to attract, retain, lead and motivate quality staff and volunteer leadership.
  • Knowledge and understanding of community resources and the ability to engage and partner these resources with the YMCA to meet strategic objectives.
  • Must have commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA and uphold its values and ethics.
  • Must be an articulate spokesperson on behalf of the YMCA.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
  • An understanding of the national and international relationships of the YMCA is preferred.
