The YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South is a leading non-profit in the Memphis area focused on strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  The Staff Accountant position is a new position being added at the corporate level (not at a branch).  It will be the primary support role to the Chief Financial Officer and will work in direct support of the entire business.  It is a great opportunity to get significant experience both in and beyond the traditional staff accounting role.  The YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South is in a growth mode and looking for the right people to join the team and help guide the association to the next level. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  1. Financial Statement Preparation – Prepares monthly financial statements and financial reporting for the operations team, senior leadership, and finance committee/board of directors. 
  2. Financial Statement Analysis - Leads the analysis of the monthly financial statements in relationship to the budget, prior year, and strategic plan.
  3. Budgets/Forecasts – Primary accounting liaison for the operations teams in the preparation of the annual budgets and updates to the annual forecast.  Will also work closely with CFO in the analysis of each.
  4. Capital Tracking – Monitors capital spend vs. budget and completes monthly capex reporting for review with CFO/senior management.
  5. Accounting Close Process - Leads the month end and year-end close processes.  Records journal entries and closes out sub-systems monthly.  Responsible for preparing the monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
  6. Audit/990 Support - Primary contact for the annual audit and coordinating with the tax preparer on the completion of the annual IRS Form 990.
  7. Cash Forecasting - Prepares cash management reporting and forecasting.
  8. Bank Reporting – Prepares quarterly bank reporting and may serve as liaison for the day-to-day banking activities..
  9. Grant Accounting - Responsible for grant and governmental program accounting, reporting and reconciliation.  
  10. Insurance/Legal - Coordinates all open insurance claims and legal matters in support of the CFO.
  11. IT Liaison – Works closely with outsourced IT vendor to ensure that appropriate service levels are maintained.  
  12. Projects - Completes a variety of accounting, financial analysis, special internal audits, accounting studies, cost studies and budget projects as well as performs other duties as assigned.  Provides recommendations for the projects performed. 
Skills/Experience: 
  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting plus at least two years accounting experience.
  2. Knowledge of general ledger and accounting functions.
  3. Knowledge of and experience with accounting systems and great excel skills as well as good written communication skills.
  4. Excellent problem solving skills. 
  5. Must be highly organized and have the ability to work with confidential matters.
