Under the direction of the Director of Program Services, and in accordance with the mission statement and purpose of the Association, the Fitness Director will be responsible for the development, coordination and supervision of the group exercise program-including teaching classes and assisting with the other healthy living programs such as Strong Men/Women, Silver Sneakers, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Ballroom Dance Lessons, Ballet/Tap classes, and Youth Sports conditioning. The position provides supervision for both facility locations, downtown Janesville and Parker YMCA in Milton.
- Develop, implement, promote and supervise group exercise programs that are safe, current, well attended and meet the needs of the YMCA community.
- Hire, train, supervise and evaluate all fitness instructors annually. This includes reviewing and keeping a certifications log so that instructors have current certifications and are properly prepared for the classes they are leading.
- Manage and coordinate fitness classes/programs, facility schedules, and instructors at multiple branches as well as classes outside of YMCA facilities. This will include teaching classes as appropriate and be able to substitute for classes as needed.
- Develop a corporate fitness/wellness plan to present to employers that will create a partnership with employers and the YMCA. This plan will show how the YMCA can help the employee, their family, and the employer lower their health care costs. The other goal of this plan is to increase adult fitness class participation, adult and family membership, as well as, improving the health of the community.
- Collaborate and develop positive relationships with others in the local health community in order to position the YMCA as a reputable partner in chronic disease prevention, recovery/rehabilitation, and as a potential grant recipient for related funds.
- Conduct Staff meetings and trainings that foster growth in instructors, builds staff loyalty and meets the goals and mission of the YMCA.
- Ensure that there is an adequate amount of equipment for the number of participants, and that all group exercise equipment is clean, and in good working order. Purchase all equipment necessary as budgeted and approved for the success of the YMCA and department.
- Develop, promote, coordinate, and serve as director and for the Healthy Kids Day annual event.
- Follow YMCA financial procedures including: development and maintenance of annual department budgets, working with supervisors to insure a balanced budget at the end of the year-with monthly monitoring and forecasting.
- Promote the YMCA fitness programs and YMCA membership throughout the county through community presentations.
- Maintain clean and safe facilities that are welcoming and inviting to members with appropriate signage, free of hazards, clutter, etc.
- Stay current and abreast of trends by attending workshops and training events.
- Instruct classes as scheduled and/or needed.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and on-the-job training as directed.
- Serve as Manager on Duty as assigned.
- Degree in health, exercise science and human performance, or related field.
- Current CPR and AED training.
- Principles of YMCA Health and Fitness and YMCA Group Exercise Instructor certifications are required within the first year.
- The ability to teach/lead a variety of group exercise classes.
- The ability to motivate staff, and develop a team environment.
- Must have strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
- The ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
