The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a highly-qualified applicant for the position of Associate Director to develop relationships with donors and prospects and represent the work of Human Rights Watch in Frankfurt, the Rhein/Main Area, and the surrounding region. This is a fixed-term part-time position with a 20 hour per week schedule for 6 months. The position will preferably be based in Frankfurt and reports to the Director of Development and Outreach based in Berlin.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Build financial support for the organization by researching, identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gifts and general support funds from supporters and donor prospects in Frankfurt and Rhein/Main Area, and increasingly throughout the region;
- Direct the Frankfurt committee including providing administrative and fundraising guidance and support for the Frankfurt committee and council members in the Rhein/Main Area; assisting in planning and conducting meetings; and soliciting the members of the Frankfurt committee and developing their networks to support the organization’s ongoing work;
- Oversee the production of HRW's annual Voices for Justice Dinner in Frankfurt and Munich, including maintaining the Raiser’s Edge database;
- Assist in cultivating the Circle of Friends in Hanover and other cities, if required;
- Develop a fundraising plan for Frankfurt and Rhein/Main Area;
- Develop, plan and coordinate additional fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events in Frankfurt and Rhein/Main Area;
- Cultivate and build partnership with foundations;
- Service, communicate with, engage and collaborate with the subcommittees, support groups, volunteers and constituents in Frankfurt and Rhein/Main area;
- Deliver output in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Development and Outreach department;
- Represent the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters;
- Create and track donor lists, fundraising reports, and event expenses; prepare event related materials; and regularly monitor the budget and ensure that resources are allocated appropriately;
- Work with the Advocacy, Communications, and Program staff to design and implement outreach and, if requested, advocacy strategies in order to advance HRW’s mission;
- Ensure organization-wide coordination and complementarity as well as maintain good working relationships with external partners; and
- Perform other tasks, as required.
Skills/Experience:
Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent education is required. An advanced degree is highly desirable.
Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in fundraising and demonstrated success in overseeing large fundraising events or experience that can be adapted for outreach, cultivation and fundraising activities is required.

- Track record of fundraising experience with proven success in creating and managing fundraising programs in Germany is required.
- Experience effectively managing high-level relationships is required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and German are required.
- Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are required.
- Strong computer skills, including experience with donor databases (preferably Raiser’s Edge) and knowledge of social media are highly desirable.
