The Winter Park YMCA Family Center is seeking a team leader with a strong background in managing successful aquatics programming as the Aquatics Director to join our leadership team. Candidates must have proven leadership experience and the ability to create an environment delivering world class customer service to grow membership and aquatics programs. Under the direction of the Associate Executive Director, the incumbent will oversee day-to-day operations of aquatic programs, manage staff, and grow program participation. S/he will implement innovative aquatic programs to promote the retention of existing members, and engagement of new members. The incumbent will provide leadership and collaborate with other directors and staff to support aquatic initiatives and achieve retention goals. This individual will have responsibilities for staff recruitment, selection, development and retention; including career succession planning for their staff team. Analytical skills will be needed for utilizing available technology, reporting tools, and processes to recognize growth and retention opportunities within the Aquatics Department. This individual will ensure staff are current with required certifications, and the implementation of aquatic schedules and procedures that provide maximum awareness and opportunities for members / staff connections. S/he will routinely evaluate programs, and collaborate with the Facility Director to establish systems for pool inspections, equipment maintenance service quality, and institute corrective action when necessary. Areas of Responsibility: 

ESTABLISH AND IMPLEMENT A DEPARTMENT PLAN:

  • Implement aquatic programs including lap swimming, swim lessons, swim team and group exercise classes, which promote retention of existing members and engagement of new members. Collaborate with Director of Safe Start to promote the Safe Start survival swim program and lessons. Direct staff to support aquatic initiatives to achieve retention goals.
  • Analyze data, systems and processes to recognize growth and retention opportunities within the Aquatics department.
  • Ensure proper implementation of aquatic schedules and procedures to provide maximum opportunities for member/staff connections. Collaborate and work effectively with all departments to achieve desired results.
  • Identify and employ best practices in systems and technology to support effective management of the Aquatics department. Utilize available technology, reporting tools and data that enhance aquatics participation and member retention.
  • Collaborate with the Facility Director to establish systems for regularly scheduled pool inspections to ensure proper and efficient working order at all times. Coordinate and schedule pool and equipment maintenance and repairs. Purchase equipment, parts and supplies approved by the purchase requisition process.
  • Monitor daily operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA of Central Florida health and safety standards and policies. Ensure all staff are current with required certifications. Maintain compliance with required documentation of pool operation.

GROW AND RETAIN MEMBERSHIP:

  • Create and implement aquatics programs with an effort to allow participants to continue along a succession plan from Safe Start to swim lessons to swim team participation. Increase program and pool participation through product knowledge and interactions with existing and potential members. Collaborate with department leads to maximize enrollments in program registration and pool usage.
  • Plan and execute aquatic events at the Family Center. Promote the Family Center and the YMCA of Central Florida’s special events among the members and community.
  • Establish and lead a volunteer Aquatics committee that assists in development and execution of membership retention efforts.

BUILD AND MANAGE A GREAT STAFF TEAM:

  • Recruit, select, develop and retain appropriate skill depth level for the department. Supervise department staff. Support training and career succession plan for staff team.
  • Provide leadership through established performance goals and standards, regular assessment of staff performance including annual performance evaluations, and staff meetings.

PREPARE AND MANAGE THE BUDGET:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to plan and manage the Aquatics budget. Control payroll and department purchasing costs within the budget and financial guidelines.

MISSION:

  • Identify and recruit active volunteers for the Family Center Annual Scholarship Campaign.
  • Provide leadership and understanding of the mission of the YMCA of Central Florida to staff and members. Promote and represent the mission and core values of the YMCA of Central Florida in the Family Center and its programs.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor degree or equivalent required; sports management, recreation management or related field of study preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 5 years experience in staff supervision and leadership required.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in managing, developing and implementing aquatics programs.
  • YMCA aquatics operations experience or similar, highly preferred.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency required.
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and First Aid certifications required.
  • Oxygen Administration certification required.
  • Lifeguard certification required. (YMCA Lifeguard certification preferred; Red Cross Lifeguard certification is acceptable, but s/he must receive YMCA certification within 60 days).
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • YMCA Lifeguard Instructor, YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer and YMCA Aquatic Management certifications a plus.
