The Spatial Data Administrator oversees Division-wide GIS infrastructure and other enterprise-scale spatial and relational database programs and provides technical expertise to Conservancy staff.  As a member of the NY Data Science Team, they work with scientists, analysts and specialists to support the application of data to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of conservation activities.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Spatial Data Administrator designs, implements, and manages data systems that support the New York Division’s conservation strategies supporting the Shared Conservation Agenda.

  • Supports the work of analysts, scientists, and conservation practitioners with spatial and non-spatial databases and infrastructure.
  • Coordinates GIS and database activities between internal and external sources, serving as the primary coordinator between the NY Data Science team and enterprise data system administrators.
  • Establishes and applies structures and workflows to ensure spatial data libraries are kept current and organized.
  • Maintains networked information systems and spatial database infrastructure used by all staff in NY, including SDE servers, cloud-based storage and analysis platforms, and mobile data collection hardware and software.
  • Supports rapid prototyping and adaptive development of data collection and distribution systems.
  • Provides backend support for webmaps and/or online database applications.
  • Provides technical expertise and training to Conservancy staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Must be willing and able to travel.
Educational Background: 
MS degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science or related field and 5-10 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience in designing and maintaining enterprise-scale spatial and relational databases to meet organizational needs.
  • Experience in developing and managing multiple projects.
  • Experience creating and maintaining internet-based spatial data viewers, interactive online analysis tools and spatial data distribution tools.
  • Supervisory experience, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance.
  • Experience administering a budget.
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (e.g. Esri ArcGIS Desktop and extensions, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, Geodatabases, etc.)
  • Experience working with relevant programming languages (e.g. KML and KMZ files, Python, R, Microsoft VBA, C++, Java, etc.) and/or database technologies (e.g. SQL Server, mySQL, Oracle, PostGRES etc.).        
  • Experience creating standardized cartographic map design and spatial data visualization products for static and dynamic (Internet-based) map applications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Demonstrated experience in spatial data management, including metadata and documentation, highly desired.
  • Experience with Remote Sensing Software (e.g. Leica Geosystems ERDAS Imagine, ENVI, Feature Analyst, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant disciplines.
  • Well versed in geospatial sciences best practices, and an ability to adapt them to TNC’s organizational needs and culture.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with other parties to obtain data sources.
  • Demonstrated experience with Agile project management.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English.
  • Experience training individuals and groups.
