The Stephens Family YMCA serves over 4,500 family units (13,000+ members) in Champaign Illinois.

Champaign is located about 2 hours from Chicago, Indianapolis and about 2.5 hours from St. Louis.
Under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer, the Sports Director is responsible for the administration, management and oversight of various Sport Programs. The Sports Director has overall fiscal responsibility, program compliance and outcomes, and ensures the safety & well-being of all the students and participants. The Sports Director must be passionate and motivated to lead successful sports programs and activities at the YMCA. Sports programming at the YMCA is expected to be managed on a high level of coordination, communication and adapt to the changing needs of the members and trends in the field.
- Oversee operations of all sports programming - preschool, youth and adult; summer sports camps and climbing wall.
- Effectively communicating the mission, vision and values of the Stephens Family YMCA.
- Ensuring all programs comply with YMCA standards and methods of operation.
- Integrating member-service and engagement strategies into all programs to ensure positive member recruitment and retention.
- Conduct ongoing assessment and evaluation of all sports programming performances and implement program changes and/or enhancements as needed.
- Provide leadership and vision in the improvement and development of existing and new innovative sports and recreation program development to better meet the needs of members and the community.
- Implement and direct department promotional and retention strategies for new and existing sports programs.
- Develop and maintain effective gym, facility scheduling and equipment to best serve members of all ages.
- Report unclean conditions, safety hazards and malfunctioning equipment.
- Plan the annual department budget; manage and implement the approved budget and take appropriate action to correct variances.
- Take lead role in implementing and managing program sponsorship initiatives, insuring
- department financial viability.
- Responsible for ordering equipment and supplies for the sports, leagues and ensure that equipment is properly secured and maintained while adhering to budgetary guidelines.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings.
- Assist in the promotion and integration with other YMCA departments to ensure the productive, effective and efficient operation of the facility.
- Supervise, train and support assigned staff and volunteers; Establish policies, procedures and guidelines for staff to ensure quality member experience.
- Develop, plan and implement new procedures, systems and methods to promote program growth, safety, member satisfaction and member retention through program participation and facility excellence.
- Identify and resolve program problem areas to ensure member satisfaction.
- Represent and promote the YMCA in the community as needed and develop positive working relationships with other organizations,
- Recruit and train high quality, energetic, and cause-driven program coaches, referees and volunteers to positively impact the lives of our youth participants.
- Coordinate and educate referees on the rules, policies and philosophies of the YMCA.
- Maintain current and seek out new collaborations with community partners to extend the footprint of the YMCA.
- Maintain indoor and outdoor sporting venues to ensure safe and organized practices and game days.
- Minimum of two years of experience working with Sports programs preferred.
- Minimum of two years of experience and proven success hiring, managing, training & developing staff preferred.
- Knowledge of summer camps, youth sports, and general program administration.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Required Certifications
- Commitment to the YMCA mission, vision and values.
- Must attend New Employee Orientation within 30 days of hire.
- Complete CPR/AED, First Aid, and online trainings.
- Learn all emergency procedures and action plans for the facility.
- Work a schedule that reflects the needs of the facility; including evenings and weekends.
Salary: $35,000.00 - $39,000.00
