The Director of Public Policy serves as the principal staff for state and federal governmental affairs and advocacy efforts in Montana. The position is responsible for managing efforts to advance the mission by interacting with policy makers, task forces, committees and coalitions; building and mobilizing volunteer advocates; communicating issues and policy priorities; and ensuring public policy efforts are integrated into all appropriate Association activities. Additionally, the Director of Public Policy will support the efforts to build and implement strategy for state and federal government affairs and advocacy in Montana.
Preferably, the successful candidate will reside in the Helena, Montana area.
- Engage volunteers in executing lobbying activities and developing relationships with state and federal legislators.
- Build relationships and work with staff at state and federal levels to implement policy changes on Alzheimer’s issues.
- Track and analyze legislation of importance at the state and federal level.
- Monitor and participate in committee meetings, advisory groups, taskforces, commissions, regulatory boards and other regulatory bodies.
- Track and report activities to ensure compliance with state lobbying laws.
- Assist in the development and implementation of all grassroots and grasstops advocacy activities focusing on state and federal policy makers.
- Recruit, train, manage, support and mobilize the efforts of volunteer advocates to advance both state and federal public policy priority issues.
- Manage Montana’s advocacy reporting database, ensuring advocates are reporting activities and contacts.
- Plan and implement public policy special events, including Alzheimer’s Day at the Capitol.
- Act as liaison with and lead state recruitment efforts for the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM).
- Provide updates of state and federal legislative matters pertaining to Alzheimer's to all chapter staff, chapter boards, Ambassadors and other advocates.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience working in state-level government a?airs or with a state legislature and/or working in grassroots advocacy, volunteer management or community organizing, preferably with non-pro?t organizations
- Familiarity with the legislative, regulatory and budget processes in Montana
- Familiarity with Alzheimer’s disease, health, seniors, aging or long-term care issues preferred
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to speak publicly in large and small groups
- Ability to work e?ectively with diverse populations with a high level of integrity, diplomacy and initiative
- Ability to self-start, multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines
- Ability to work with attention to detail and accuracy
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to use other software and databases
- Have current contacts within the state legislature and executive branch, and with potential partners and collaborators in Montana preferred
- Ability to travel as needed to perform job duties
- Access to a reliable vehicle, a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs
