Context: Assists the Program Department Leadership team with the overall direction of the department and supports the successful development and implementation of the Strategic Framework and Program Department Goals.  Potential for increasing managerial responsibility. Initial focus for the position will be leading the implementation of the Program Department Toolkit for Changemakers.  Other special projects and management assignments to be determined. 

Scope: Working in concert with Program Department Leadership, the Senior Manager, Strategic Implementation ensures that the national programmatic goals and the Toolkit for Changemakers is planned and executed successfully. In essence, this role is designed to provide additional strategic capacity and leverage for the Program Department Leadership Team to move forward change in the department, starting with the Toolkit for Change makers which includes implementation of the structural, behavioral and systemic changes in the Program Department.  The Senior Manager, Strategic Implementation convenes and supports cross departmental teams and convenes collaborative planning process; develops and implements stakeholder engagement and internal communications plans; identifies training and development needed for successful implementation. Serves as a leader and model for designing and implementing with an equity lens. Over time the vision is that this role will assumes increasing responsibility for managing accountability for Toolkit implementation and outcomes and may expand to include providing leadership and management to other areas of the Deputy National Program Director portfolio.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Works with the PDLT (Program Dept. Leadership Team) and Implementation team(s) to shape and socialize and implement the Toolkit for Changemakers. Supports the planning and implementation of a comprehensive, inclusive and equitable change management and engagement process to ensure staff and volunteers have the necessary guidance and access to the Toolkit.
  • Aligns Program Department Initiatives with the broader organization change initiatives.
  • Evaluates results and implications for programmatic outcomes, budget and staffing plans in concert with the Deputy National Program Director. Develops implementation and associated training plans to replicate and integrate successful practices and principles in other locations.
  • Partners with PDLT and other managers on HR related issues (, personnel issues and conflict management (including performance improvement plans and similar processes and grievances where those arise around questions of work flexibility) related to the implementation of the Toolkit for Changemakers and other Departmental practices.
  • Manages day-to-day change management process: driver of Implementation team’s ongoing work; coordinate with consultants; develop and execute internal communications and stakeholder engagement plans; create channels for ongoing feedback.
  • Collaborates with PDLT  to develop phases of implementation of the Toolkit for Changemakers. Assess impact and refine through stakeholder engagement and feedback. Develops and implements internal communications and stakeholder engagement plans to ensure equity and transparency throughout process.
  • Works with the Program Department Leadership to plan, execute and evaluate strategies for the Sierra Club.  Writes departmental reports.  Supports Deputy Program Director (s) in designated areas of supporting the department. Develops and maintains strong relationships with colleagues throughout Sierra Club to build a base for cross-organization collaboration.
  • Serves as a staff liaison for various Sierra Club functions and represents the Program Department to other departments by providing briefings, perspectives and strategic advice.
  • Represents Sierra Club to the press, donors, partner organizations, government officials, and business leaders, as needed.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5-7 years’ minimum experience as a staff manager, project manager, team manager or comparable position, which includes substantial experience developing strategy, oversight of organizational operations, planning and managing grassroots programs and campaigns, organizing at the grassroots level, lobbying, managing program and staff, planning and managing budgets, and working with partners.
  • Strong knowledge of the environmental field and/or advocacy strategies
  • Prior experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Experience with operationalizing equity and inclusion;We want people who understand the intersectionality of race, gender, class - both internally facing and in the community with current, new and potential allies, partners and Sierra Club members
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively convene multiple stakeholders across campaigns and capacities within states and/or regions and impartially mediate competing priorities in service to collective vision and goals.
  • Strong project management, facilitation, and change management skills.
  • Core collaboration skills include:
    • Proactive and able to step in where they see opportunity (vs. being dependent on concrete guidelines);
    • Flexible and able to strategically assess situations, shifting as needed with ease;
    • Responsive and able to nimbly move across campaigns as part of collective success;

  • Strong Emotional Intelligence and demonstrated ability to create rapport and inspire trust within organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply equity, movement and justice principles in work.
  • Strong writing, editing and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to travel for the work important, but specific percentage can be negotiated.
