The Frank P. Phillips YMCA has benefited from extraordinary staff leadership and is now seeking an individual to be the Association’s next President and CEO. The CEO is expected to be highly visible in the community, ensuring that the Y remain a highly respected and desired partner with a strong stake in identifying and addressing the solutions for community issues. Ensuring all programs have a focus on the YMCA’s mission.

Qualified leader must have demonstrated record of solid business acumen, ability to decipher and analysis financial data to make sound decisions based on the financial data. Ability to teach staff how to utilize the financial information for programmatic purposes.

The next leader must be able to implement and direct fundraising programs and practices that assure that public and private resources are available to support operational and capital needs. Staff is a key component to the continued success of the YMCA. The individual must be able to evaluate the current staff and create individual staff development plans. The plan must ensure that the YMCA has an outstanding, dedicated, and culturally competent team.

The CEO must be an ambassador for the mission, goals, and values of the YMCA within the community and uphold the highest ethical standards and values exemplified in the YMCA heritage. The CEO should be able to identify key issues and challenges facing the whole community with particular attention to value-added membership programming that will address the needs of the community and align with the Y’s mission. Growth in membership in a meaningful and impactful way is essential, it is not just about increasing membership enrollment.

The programs that are offered by the YMCA are essential to the continued growth, development and retention of the membership; particular attention needs to be focused on the recent increase in local competition for health and wellness programs. Through the decision by the leadership (both board and staff), it is critical for the next leader to develop and implementation a strategic plan within the first year.

Individual must be a creative and an energetic self-starter, with fiscally sound practices and take calculated risk to make significant impact in the community. Have executive courage to make tough decisions and manage the potential issues and opportunities that may occur. The ability to bring a community together of varying diverse backgrounds is the key to the success of the new leader and continue to tradition of Christian emphasized programs as it is part of the overall YMCA mission.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Fiscal Management: Ensure the Y’s financial resources are properly managed and report on its financial position. Use high-level financial analysis to forecast trends, growth and stability while consistently leading Y to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff to lead their departments and monitor and meet budgets. Develop and implement stewardship strategies.

Improve Operating Performance: Partner with the board to identify issues and develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives to solve them. Remain fully informed of all operational issues and be able to quickly address issues that arise as well as forecast future needs. Manage and direct the Y’s operations and activities.

Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: The ability to work effectively with board of directors, volunteers, community leaders and key staff to identify critical community needs and develop a strategic roadmap focused on organizational strategies. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in aligning committees and their charts of work to support the strategies and goals of the Y.

Build and Manage the Staff Team: Serve as a leader who is able to motivate, engage, and retain staff in a positive and productive manner by creating and setting an expectation for excellence. Demonstrate an engaging, open, positive and inclusive leadership style and display integrity, a high regard for honesty and courage and an open mind to innovative ways of improving services and expanding impact.

Educational Background: 
Accredited 4-year college degree (required; non-negotiable).
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  • Must have the ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  • The ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered, for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which the Y serves.

Preferred Candidate Criteria:

  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via YMCA of the USA).
  • Minimum five years prior experience in senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multi-level staff and employees.
  • Fiscally sound business approach. Grant management experience a plus.
  • Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual and capital campaigns.
  • Proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management of more than $500K annually operations.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range: Commensurate with Experience. Hiring range is $70,000 - $85,000 annualized. coverage if so elected; supplemental life, disability, vision, and flexible spending accounts are available.

Benefits: Benefits include a defined contribution plan with 8% of salary contributed by the association (when eligibility requirements are met).
