Primary responsibility for managing media assets for Fellows and storytelling grantees. Responsible for coordinating, selecting and editing video and photo assets and providing quality assurance for the entire metadata contents of video and photo footage for permanent archiving in the Society’s visual asset repository. This includes editing raw footage into selects video reels, researching rights and clearance information, and creating accurate descriptions and precise keywording using the taxonomies that are departmentally specific, dynamic and ever changing. Provides final quality assurance of footage before submitting assets into the Society's archive and updating grants system and internal constituencies.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Review, select and catalog all operating programs, Fellows, and storytelling grantee photos and videos, attaching correct metadata and ensuring legal rights compliance (30%)
  • Serve as primary point of contact for all external program Explorers, Fellows, and storytelling grantees regarding media assets (20%)
  • Assist in building and ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures for asset cataloging, search and usage (20%)
  • Assist impact media team in highlighting and promoting Society media assets for broad use on Society and its Partners platforms (10%)
  • Collaborate with Operating Programs and Media Innovation teams on media assets for Fellows & grantees (10%)
  • Maintain reports on program & Fellow media, including tracking of asset usage, as required (10%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 3 years photo & video experience and cataloging media . Understanding of modern media landscape and impact storytelling.  Familiarity with National Geographic Programs and initiatives a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with high-profile storytelling talent (photographers, filmmakers, journalists).
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multiple internal stakeholders.
  • Strong research and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail, ability to understand and prioritize multiple requests from different team members;
  • Must be a self-guided, creative, highly organized, and motivated individual;
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to work through problem-solving on a new team;
  • Basic understanding of legal and rights terminology;
  • Must be capable of exercising flexibility, multitasking and working effectively with others.
  • Knowledge of FinalCut, Premiere, and Lightroom required.
