The Senior Director, UNA-USA, will develop and lead UNA-USA national initiatives to grow a national movement and engage UNA-USA membership and the general U.S. public in supporting the vital work of the United Nations and advocating for strong U.S. leadership at the UN. The Senior Director, UNA-USA, will use his/her experience with movement building/campaigning and fluency in global policy or international relations to grow UNA-USA to the next level with programming and engagement strategies to develop relationships with key constituents. The Senior Director, UNA-USA, will help manage the UNA-USA team and be responsible for internal coordination with other programs, initiatives, and activities of the United Nations Foundation, particularly the Better World Campaign (BWC). This job is based in Washington, DC.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop and implement strategies to mobilize Americans to support the vital work of the United Nations with a particular focus on colleges and communities.
  • Work with the Executive Director, UNA-USA to develop and manage the UNA-USA mission, annual business plan and budget. 
  • Manage the membership and communications teams to ensure mission alignment and effective and accountable execution of UNA-USA programs.

Membership & Chapter Management

  • Lead efforts to expand and maintain UNA-USA chapters (campus and community) to include all 50 states, and targeted U.S. House and Senate districts, and major metropolitan areas.
  • Develop and execute, in conjunction with UNA-USA staff, all membership recruitment and retention strategies to expand paid and youth membership.
  • Ensure chapter sustainability and membership growth by maintaining an understanding of current chapter and division needs and determining necessary resources, training and programs

Movement-building and Advocacy

  • Identify best practices on constituent engagement to influence policy makers and implement new initiatives to ensure UNA-USA remains on the cutting edge of international affairs advocacy.
  • Work collaboratively with UNA and BWC staff to develop and implement UNA-USA advocacy agenda, including Hill visits, in-district meetings and digital advocacy actions.
  • Work with UNA and BWC staff to engage the UNA-USA membership, leadership and constituency on taking action on the advocacy agenda in order to influence important legislative and policy developments.

Communications

  • Work closely with UNA, BWC and UNF communications teams to strategically position UNA programs, membership, chapters and advocacy agenda.
  • Provide oversight on the implementation of UNA-USA communications plans.

Events & Programs

  • Develop and administer plans and budget for UNA-USA’s national events, specifically the Global Engagement Summit (GES) at the United Nations, Global Leadership Summit (GLS) and UN Day events.
  • Develop GLS strategies to increase attendee representation from all 50 states and key Congressional districts, working with membership, communications and BWC staff. 
  • Serve as staff liaison to National Council Planning Committees to coordinate session topics and speakers for events.
  • Work with UN Foundation events team to make decisions on key event components, including venue selection, contract approvals, catering, set-up, show design, and run of show.

Other

  • Serve as staff liaison to the National Council and assigned Committees to execute the mission and sustainability of UNA-USA
  • Other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Undergraduate degree required. Advanced degree in relevant field preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience in grassroots movement building, such as community and/or political organizing, is required.
  • At least 8-10 years of nonprofit, movement building or other organizational programs experience.
  • At least five years of direct staff team management and supervision.
  • Experience working in international affairs, development, or organizations highly desirable.
  • Solid financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis and reporting.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with high profile individuals and partners.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of community leaders, volunteers, business executives, UN/government officials and donors.
  • Commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations required.
  • Self-starter with excellent judgment; proven ability to drive multiple aspects of projects from inception to implementation within limited timeframe.
  • Very strong skills working in coalition and teams – collaborator; diplomat; problem solver; relationship-builder; strong inter-personal skills.
  • Stress tolerance and resilience; sense of humor; attention to detail; and ability to work under pressure with shifting priorities.
  • Multi-cultural experience.
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
