The Washington Investigations Correspondent works at the heart of NPR’s public service mission, holding powerful people and institutions accountable. With the help and resources of the network’s Investigations Team, the Washington Investigations Correspondent will develop sources and mine public records and disclosure reports in search of conflicts or corruption in public life. This work must be sophisticated not only in its depth and complexity but also in the quality of its storytelling on all platforms to include live radio, podcasting and social media.
- Monitor public documents and other records to hold elected and appointed leaders in Washington up to the ethical and moral standards of their positions.
- Cultivate sources and make use of reporting tools like FOIA, database acquisition and analysis and data mining to uncover original stories that matter.
- Report and write original investigative stories that live up to NPR’s standards for accuracy, fairness and newsworthiness.
- Keep up with news and developments in national politics to produce investigative accountability journalism related to presidential and other federal elections.
- Record, gather or identify sounds elements to turn each investigative piece into a rich and memorable audio experience.
- Write text-focused stories with the same ambition, creativity and high editorial standards as NPR’s audio projects.
- Use social media and other digital tools to reach, engage with and grow NPR’s audience.
- Work on major projects, as well as short deadline pieces, sometimes simultaneously.
- Work collaboratively with team members, other NPR employees, member station reporters and editors and external editorial partners in developing investigative projects.
- Assume other duties as assigned by the Senior Investigations Editor.
- Minimum education experience, required or preferred. (Ex: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience)
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Substantial on-air broadcast experience and field production experience.
- Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system.
