Directs all aspects of the wellness department through efforts that include quality programs, enhance customer service, member retention.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Directs all aspects of the wellness department through efforts that include quality programs as well as enhance customer service and member retention. Helps to build the community’s understanding of the YMCA’s cause and impact. Develops, plans and implements new procedures and methods to achieve strategic goals.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops, implements and manages health and wellness programming, keeping programs and offerings current and relevant.
  • Develops and disseminates appropriate program information in order to promote health and wellness to the public and current members. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information, may organize and schedule program registrations.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs/classes.
  • Participates in the grant process, providing oversite, direction, monitoring and/or reporting for any grants secured for the wellness/fitness area.
  • Employs strategies to increase member engagement and member retention by engaging members in new fitness classes, new equipment, new changes, etc.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel, interns and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Performs regular audit of fitness equipment and facilities ensuring that YMCA health and safety standards and policies are being adhered to as well as makes recommendations for repair, replacement.
  • Performs duties of a fitness instructor and personal trainer as needed.
  • Participates in the planning of the annual budget; manages and implements the approved budget for wellness/fitness and takes appropriate action to correct variances.
  • Leads assigned aspects of the fund-raising campaign.
  • Participates in staff meetings and/or related meetings.
  • Takes a leadership role in the planning and coordination of branch-wide events.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Serves as manager on duty as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • One or more nationally recognized personal training or coaching certifications.
  • Previous supervisory experience in healthy lifestyles.
  • Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
