The Aquatics Program Coordinator shall provide direct leadership of staff and assist in the management of aquatics programming including but not limited to swim lessons, adult lessons, and water fitness classes.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Assist in the development, promotion and delivery of the YMCA swim lesson program and birthday parties.
- Maintain open communication with supervisor about departmental, member, and staff concerns or issues.
- Responsible for development, promotion and delivery of the following programs: group swim lessons, private lessons, water fitness classes, gym and swim, and SPLASH. Additionally, in the summer, oversee the development, promotion and delivery of swim lessons at Silver Lake. Oversee indoor/outdoor pools and splash park.
- Schedule and lead in-service trainings for instructors on a bi-monthly basis. Attend other aquatic and branch meetings as determined by supervisor.
- Assist in recruitment, hiring, training and supervision of non-exempt staff within budget limitations in Aquatic Department. Coordinate scheduling of instructors for all aquatics programs.
- Ensure that instructors are on time and following safety procedures according to the Hockomock & National YMCA, Redwoods and Board of Health guidelines. Ensure high-quality programs are being taught following the National YMCA Swimming Programs.
- Promote membership enrollment and fosters leadership development by encouraging members to become involved in the aquatics committee and other volunteer roles.
- Assist in the preparation of departmental brochure and promotional materials in accordance with set timeline and YMCA graphic standards.
- Maintain facility and equipment appearance in a neat, clean and organized manner. Report concerns to supervisor.
- Provide direct leadership for and encourages the participation of staff at in house and off-site training programs. Observes and meets regularly with staff. Completes annual performance evaluations on swim instructors.
- Demonstrate support for YMCA ROFY by participating in events, recruiting volunteers, and meeting assigned fundraising goal.
- In cooperation with the Aquatics Director, develop short and long-range goals and objectives for Aquatics programs.
- Assist with registration procedures including evaluation, registration, waitlist, master rosters and roster writing as needed. Process transfers, credits, and refunds as needed.
- Communicate with town recreation departments to coordinate swim lessons. Process registrations and coordinate billing of participants to town.
- Demonstrate support for YMCA special events by participating and aiding in the delivery of those events on a regular basis depending on the frequency of those events.
- Provide 30 hours of direct service weekly which includes swim instruction, deck lead and lifeguarding and 10 hours of administrative duties weekly throughout the year.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Skills/Experience:
- The Aquatics Program Coordinator must bring to this position past experience in the field. This position requires previous experience in group work to direct/recruit and train staff and volunteers. The person in this position must have the knowledge required for the management of programs, equipment, staff, and schedules of the program area.
- The Coordinator must possess a number of technical skills related to swim instruction. He/She must be certified in the YMCA swim lessons, or achieve certification within six months, and be working towards YMCA specialty courses (including instructor level). In addition, he/she must be CPR & AED Healthcare provider, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certified.
- The Coordinator must have the ability to establish a supportive relationship with staff, volunteers, members and program members. The Aquatics Program Coordinator must be able to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Sound judgment inappropriately delegating responsibilities to staff and volunteers is important. Being able to work as part of a team in order to accomplish the Association's long and short-range goals is essential.
