Exciting opportunity to lead a well-established camp with rich history and tradition. Lowell is located about 25 miles northwest of Boston.

The Camp Director is responsible for planning, operating and implementing a safe, innovative and high-quality program for all attending camp. Camp Director is responsible for growing camp enrollments and revenue to further the YMCA mission. This position is responsible to carry out the mission and values of the Greater Lowell Family YMCA Camp Massapoag.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage communication (new camper welcome packets, recruitment, marketing, survey, newsletters, social media).
  • Plan, Schedule and lead on-site camp events and projects as needed.
  • Hiring and training of all Camp staff. Complete all paperwork (collection, recording, submitting to HR, communication with Staff.
  • Board of Health Licensing - Follow established health and safety standards of the YMCA and Dept. of Public Health.
  • Responsible for control of Camp Massapoag Budget, and must maintain proper documentation for all purchases and expenses for camp.
  • Develop and maintain records essential for control, evaluation, and reporting. Includes
  • following financial procedures.
  • Assist with camper and staff recruitment by attending camp fairs, home visits, and community events.
  • Drive off-season revenue opportunities, including off-season rental groups
  • Coordinate pre-camp program preparations (i.e. hiring, training)
  • Ensure all staff is following and enforcing all rules as well as fulfilling all expectations and their assigned duties.
  • Directly supervise all unit staff and assist them in meeting goals. Evaluate all program staff. Plan & provide an atmosphere for high staff morale.
  • Implement Camp Massapoag safety and risk management strategies.
  • Routinely evaluate the effectiveness of all programs and staff to meet the mission of the YMCA.
  • Demonstrate and teach the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to all campers and staff.
  • Maintain positive public relations with parents, visitors and the general public at all times.
  • Capable to respond appropriately to emergencies and situations requiring First Aid and CPR.
  • Work within budget to plan activities and purchase required supplies/equipment.
  • Recommend changes in program, structure, administrative procedures, facilities, or policy, which you feel would benefit the camp.
  • Further, develop a robust LIT program to create a pathway for future counselors and staff.
  • Handle discipline and behavior problems as necessary, in accordance with the YMCA policy and procedures.
  • Work to ensure a positive experience for all campers.
  • Responsible for all personnel, including interviewing, hiring, training, supervising, evaluating and terminating (if necessary) of all camp staff.
  • Responsible for collection of all necessary employee paperwork.
  • Prepare camp and staff manuals and conduct staff training and orientation.
  • Oversee scheduling of staff.
  • Ensure final performance evaluations are conducted on all staff at the end of the season.
  • Schedule and execute the opening/closing of campgrounds and buildings annually with facilities director.
  • Ensure all facilities and grounds clean, maintained and safe during camp season.
  • Generate and facilitate special events and family programming at the YMCA
Educational Background: 
BS. or equivalent in recreation, education or a related discipline.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 25 years old.
  • Prior camp staff experience in a supervisory role for at two years; camp administrative experience for at least two years.
  • Ability to take initiative, be highly organized, effectively communicate, and manage groups.
  • Strong record of program planning and implementation.
  • The desire to work in a camp setting.
  • Good role model, high integrity and level of professionalism, and adaptable.
  • Capacity to recruit, train and supervise staff.
  • Positive attitude and ability to build a cohesive team.
  • Ability to relate effectively and compassionately to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Exceptional skills in human relations, budgeting, sound fiscal management, financial development, program management and staff development. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to think and act quickly and safely in emergency situations.
  • Current First Aid and Adult and Child CPR certifications.
