Provide leadership and coordination of company functional accounting activities. Ensure company accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles. This position is accountable for the accounting operations of the company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk and enhance the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results. This position involves supervision over general accounting, property accounting, internal auditing, cost accounting and budgetary controls. This position is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation/supervision of all external reporting. The position will work closely with the CFO to create/produce long term modeling/projections, the annual budget and monthly trending/variance reporting. This position oversees the activities of subordinates and motivates trains and directs them to perform at the highest level in order to achieve outstanding results.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assume responsibility for the planning, management and completion of the annual audit per GAAP reporting requirements
    • Ensures systems conform to generally accepted accounting principals and sound financial management controls result in an unqualified audit
    • Identifies potential GAAP related compliance issues, researches proper accounting of issues/topics identified and effectively communicates findings to CFO and all interested parties
    • Responsible for preparing the audited financial statements and accompanying footnotes (including all proposed audit adjustments) for review by external auditors and provides oversight of the annual financial audit process and A-133 compliance audit.
  • Directs the planning, developing and implementing effective accounting policies and procedures that support solid internal controls
    • Regularly reviews policies to ensure they are in accordance with evolving regulations and legal requirements and identifies, defines and develops new policies for the organization as the organization’s structure, environment and/or legal requirements dictate.
    • Responsible for developing and maintaining the internal audit function, including designing audit programs which effectively measure compliance with existing policies/procedures and the timely reporting of compliance issues to all appropriate staff
  • Analyzes accounting transactions, researches and solves problems detected during the analysis, evaluates accounting processes for accuracy and efficiency, develops and implements corrective action as needed. This includes assuming the responsibility for the timely and accurate completion of all month-end/year-end internal reporting.
    • Directs/oversees the month-end/year-end closing process and reviews the financial statements for significant errors prior to closing. Ensure the accuracy and validity of the financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
    • Responsible for the development, analysis and interpretation of statistical and accounting information in order to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.
    • Prepares/creates long term modeling/projections on YMCA operations
    • Leads annual budgeting process, works directly with branch leadership on creation of annual branch projections and budget; including providing all relevant budget schedules and budget trainings for all involved in annual budgeting process.
  • Assumes responsibility for reviewing and/or filing of all required external reporting to all local, state and federal agencies and financial institutions in an accurate and timely manner.
    • Reporting is reviewed for presentation, content and accuracy. Areas of significant change from prior reporting and/or potential issues are communicated to appropriate staff in a timely manner and prior to completion.
    • Ensures all relevant amounts are balanced between the internal software programs, general ledger and required reporting. Reconciling items are thoroughly researched, documented and resolved.
  • Assumes the overall responsibility of the daily operations of the finance department and accounting staff
    • Provide supervision, direction, motivation, training and support to subordinates. Assure that delegated tasks and priorities are effectively accomplished in a timely and efficient manner. Ensure that time-sensitive critical responsibilities of subordinates are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
    • Administer sound personnel practices within the workgroup which are consistent with overall organization policies. Evaluate and document subordinate’s performance through formalized performance reviews and more frequent informal sessions.
  • Responsible for testing and monitoring certain aspects of the computer systems, ensuring systems produce accurate, timely information.
    • Ensures systems used to capture financial information are thoroughly tested prior to implementation. All issues are clearly documented and communicated to all appropriate parties prior to system implementation.
    • Responsible for identifying problems, developing processes and overseeing the writing of Excel or Access programs to extract data in an efficient and accurate manner.
  • Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with a CPA or MBA required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Thorough knowledge of financial and accounting practices and procedures. 8 to 10 years of relevant accounting experience required. 
  • Extensive experience in the finance function in a leadership capacity with knowledge of the not-for-profit environment desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities.
  • Must have demonstrated prior leadership, skills, knowledge and understanding in financial regulations, laws and standard practice and the ability to motivate and retain a high-quality professional staff with expertise in such areas.
  • Possess the ability to communicate effectively and translate financial concepts and results to staff.
  • Solid analytical and technical skills including ability to use all related hardware and software. 
     
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $86,839.33 - $130,258.99
