The Alliance exists to support and serve member Ys, across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in the areas of board governance, strategic planning, shared services and through networking and relationship building among Ys. The State Alliance will also be an integral part of the on-boarding and orientation of the new CEO in close concert with the local Board of Directors. By leveraging the Y brand and the strengths of Ys to speak with one voice by emphasizing our collective impact through strategic relationships, the Alliance influences public policy and connection to evidenced based solutions to advance our cause and position Ys to solve critical social issues. NOTE: PA has a bi-cameral, bipartisan YMCA Legislative Caucus in the General Assembly to advocate for issues of importance to YMCAs in Pennsylvania.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Board Expectations: The Y board seeks an experienced leader who has the requisite background and skills to achieve excellence in the following areas:

  • Lead, Develop and Motivate the Staff Team: Serve as a leader who can effectively hire, motivate, engage and reward staff in a positive and productive manner. Actively engage in staff development and performance leading to superior results in program delivery, member satisfaction and community outreach and engagement. Lead by example by creating and maintaining a culture of integrity, high ethical standards, and values as well as work/life balance.
  • Continue to Expand Operational Performance and Services: Assess all aspects of the current operations and create plans that will continue to grow and retain membership as well as expand program delivery to meet critical community needs. Provide a balanced focus on strong fiscal performance while expanding services to the community. Work with the board and staff to develop long-term and annual tactical plans and metrics for achieving key goals and objectives.
  • Finalize and Implement the Strategic Plan: Review the efforts, data/information and process that has been led by the board thus far to draft a new strategic plan. Ensure, with the board, that the voices of all key stakeholders (i.e. community leaders, volunteers and staff) have been heard in identifying the critical community needs to be addressed and that the initiatives drafted outline how best to solve those issues. Finalize plan and create action steps and timeline in partnership with the board.
  • Advocate the Vision of the YMCA/Be the Heart and Soul of the Operation: Proactively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, staff, volunteers and the community. Serve as an active ambassador for the mission and vision for the YMCA within the community as a respected leader with the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders developing mutually beneficial collaborations.
  • Lead Fundraising Efforts Including Preparation for Capital Development: Partner with the board to continue success in increased annual donations that provide financial assistance to those in need as well as support operations. Work with the board to lead all aspects of a capital campaign effort to expand facilities to better meet the needs of members, program participants and the community. Ensure public and private partnerships and resources are developed to support these efforts that also instill confidence, credibility, and trust in the Y with community leaders and donors.
Educational Background: 
Accredited 4-year college degree (required/non-negotiable).
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  • Must have the ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  • Fiscally sound business management approach with the ability to develop, manage and adjust the budget plan as needed.
  • Have the ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.
  • Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual campaigns and securing grants.
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  • A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management in excess of $1M+ or more annually.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (Note: Candidates not in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain via Y-USA).
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range: $75,000-$95,000 (Salary is commensurate with experience. Housing option is available, and if elected, salary will be adjusted accordingly).

Benefits: Health care plan, including vision coverage and vacation, as well as other benefits per the personnel policy. Retirement contribution - YMCA pays 7%/employee contributes 5% per eligibility requirements (www.yretirement.org). Additional benefit details shared with finalists.
