Senior Campaign Representative, Mid-Atlantic

Context: Plans, directs, implements, and manages a full suite of Sierra Club clean energy initiatives to move beyond fossil fuels in the Mid-Atlantic (primarily Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia)

Scope: Develops and directs some multi-state efforts to move from dirty to clean energy as part of a just and equitable transition towards a decarbonized economy.  Collaborates with various internal departments and programs, partner organizations, and volunteer leadership to ensure execution of strategic coordinated community, state, and regional campaigns and manages daily operation of these campaigns.  Ensures strategic alignment of campaigns with regional and national goals and objectives. Creates and executes campaign work plans and revises plans as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.  Identifies resources needed and assigns individual responsibilities.  Prepares and submits weekly progress reports.  Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and to the public.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Directs Sierra Club’s full suite of campaign efforts in the Mid-Atlantic (primarily Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia) to move from dirty to clean energy.  Develops and implements strategic campaigns in collaboration with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Organizing Department, State Chapters, Communications Department, Digital Strategies, capacities and programs, and volunteer leadership.
  • In collaboration with state teams, engages key players in operating and regulating power plants and other industrial facilities, as well as reducing climate pollution from buildings and vehicles. Supports and works with strategic partners in frontline communities, with labor, and elected and appointed decision makers to assure advancement of Sierra Club’s priorities. 
  • Supports and provides professional expertise to staff and volunteers.  Provides conservation training and motivation to staff and volunteers.
  • Implements Sierra Club best practices regarding the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing, justice, equity, and inclusion. Works to develop and ensure that volunteers and partners assume meaningful roles in the campaign.
  • Works with the Communications Department and Chapters to support media outreach activities related to the campaign.  Serves as a Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer media exposure.
  • Writes, edits, and reviews educational and advocacy materials.
  • Represents the Sierra Club to the general public and to strategic allies.
  • Introduces creative ideas and approaches; fosters creativity among team members.
  • Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
B.A./B.S. degree in an environmental, political, legal, or related field. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in the planning and implementation of campaigns, including: planning and managing a state or regional level legislative campaign; working with attorneys and utilizing legal advocacy; lobbying; media relations and strategic communications; working with senior level political and business leaders;
  • Experience and relationships with organized labor and clean energy partners in the Mid-Atlantic
  • Excellent knowledge of energy issues, including power plants, worker and community transition, renewable energy, energy efficiency, clean transportation, and building electrification.
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
