If you are curious and love the adrenaline of a daily news broadcast we want to hear from you. The Supervising Editor is a key editorial position responsible for the integrity and quality of the daily program. As Supervising Editor you help to edit the daily show including host interviews, reported stories and other content for the broadcast. You are responsible for leading the program’s coverage for later feeds, working with the team that updates the program when news breaks. You are also responsible for forward planning of stories to the next day and beyond, working closely with the Supervising Senior editor for planning and relevant reporting desks at NPR. You are a writer with flair and accuracy able to meet tight daily deadlines. The Supervising Editor is part of ATC’s core leadership team and is involved in planning daily coverage while ensuring the program meets NPR’s standards for accuracy, fairness and balance. You work closely with four of the best hosts in public radio, as well as with the show’s editorial and production staff. A minimum of ten years journalism is required and candidates will have broadcast experience. It is expected that the successful candidate will work an 11am-8pm shift.
- Design and drive editorial excellence and vision for All Things Considered
- Lead breaking news plans among a team of journalists
- Lead editorial meetings, encouraging staffers to pitch and execute great story ideas
- Organize and maintain staff schedules efficiently, using rotations and training to further staff development.
- Provide written and verbal editorial feedback to staff
- Collaborate with digital news to maximize show content across platforms
- Evaluate, develop, and manage staff performance
- Participate in budgetary reviews and hiring process for All things Considered
- Conduct outreach and represent the show in public forums
- 4-6 previous years of managerial experience
- 8+ years’ experience as a news reporter, news producer, or news editor
- Thorough knowledge of news and feature reporting techniques and demonstrated writing ability.
- Proven skill in both news and feature editing is required
- Considerable knowledge of current events, including international and domestic news
- Proven experience working on deadline, in particular a daily deadline
- Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness
- Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
Preferred:
- Prior knowledge of broadcast writing and audio production preferred
- Experience producing on digital audio workstations preferred
