Summary Statement

AARP Foundation Litigation (AFL) is an advocate in courts nationwide for the rights of people 50 and older, addressing diverse legal issues that affect their daily lives and assuring that they have a voice in the judicial system.  Legal Fellows assist our AARP Foundation Litigation attorneys with important research and tasks related to trial litigation that impact vulnerable older adults. 

 

Responsibilities

Duties of the Fellow include the following:

  • Assisting AARP Foundation Litigation attorneys with tasks related to trial litigation impacting vulnerable older adults, including in the areas of elder abuse and neglect, age and disability discrimination, consumer protection, employee benefits, health, housing, livable communities, and low-income benefits. Such work will include research, writing, drafting, document review, client and witness interviewing, and other litigation tasks;
  • Assisting AARP Foundation Litigation attorneys to prepare amicus briefs for AARP and AARP Foundation on issues of concern to older adults in federal and state appellate courts;
  • Assisting AARP Foundation Litigation attorneys to prepare submissions to federal administrative agencies (e.g., EEOC and DOL) regarding regulatory matters concerning the rights and interests of older adults.

 

Requirements

Fellows must be currently enrolled in a degreed law program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, demonstrate public interest/public service experience.  Current law students with strong writing and research skills, LEXIS proficiency and strong familiarity with the Blue Book, A Uniform System of Citation.

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
