The Hawk Migration Internship is a three-month position during which the intern will learn how to spot and identify various raptor species in flight and gain experience carrying out migrating hawk species surveys on the Audubon Center in Greenwich’s site. This position will provide the intern with important field work skills and experience. The intern will also be responsible for recording data and educating the general public. This internship offers a unique opportunity to learn about and participate in a joint citizen science project and fundraising event at a non-profit organization. The intern will gain valuable experience working within an established conservation organization in exchange for college credit.
- Spot and identify various raptor species in flight that are migrating along the Atlantic Flyway, sometimes from a great distance
- Carry out migrating hawk species surveys
- Assist the Hawk Watcher in the field by recording data and educating the general public
- Attend the Fall Festival and Hawk Watch event in September and assist where needed
- Complete an Internship Project and present your work to the Audubon Center in Greenwich community by writing a scientific paper or by giving a presentation
- Strong desire to gain field research experience
- Passionate about wildlife conservation and eager to learn
- Able to spot birds in flight from a great distance
- Highly motivated and hardworking
- Must be willing to work in unfavorable weather conditions
- Applicants must be at least a freshman in college with a 3.0/B average or higher
- Must be available at least two days (7-10 hours) per week between Monday-Friday. Must be flexible with their schedule and available at short notice on pre-determined days.
