The Multimedia Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a full-time Assistant Editor (Coordinator) for the New York office. The Assistant Editor will help the Multimedia Division create compelling and journalistically excellent videos that amplify, explain, and tell stories about the people and issues at the center of the human rights movement. The Multimedia Division is part of the Media Department and works to determine the best messages, the right audiences, and the best vehicle to raise public awareness of the human rights violations HRW investigates and documents. This position reports to the Associate Multimedia Director, based in New York.
- Organize and prepare projects for editors;
- Manage and convert media from various sources;
- Subtitle footage and coordinate translation of content;
- Search for photos and additional video material;
- String out content and pull selects as needed;
- Assist in the editing of videos and clip reels;
- Assist filming in our studio or on location, as needed;
- Maintain documentary video and photo content on Human Rights Watch website, YouTube channels, and other distribution channels;
- Service internal and external requests for HRW video content;
- Provide administrative support to the team including scheduling, preparing for meetings, maintaining files, processing payments, etc.; and
- Perform other tasks as may be assigned.
- A minimum of two years of experience in journalism, documentaries, digital media, or a related field is required.
- Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with geographically dispersed colleagues at all levels of the organization are required.
- Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with excellent time management skills are required.
- Ability to work independently as well as function as a member of a team are required.
- Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks is required.
- Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications and Adobe Premiere is required. Experience with After Effects is a plus.
- Strong oral and written communications skills in English are required. Proficiency in another language, especially Spanish or Arabic, is a plus.
- Interest in international relations and/or human rights is preferred.
