A community hub of the National Audubon Society, Patterson Park Audubon Center is located in southeast Baltimore City, in a historic but modernized row home, across the street from Patterson Park. The Center works to engage participants in conservation education and action, through environmental education, bird conservation, and community revitalization.
The summer programs led by this position are outdoor-based, hands-on experiences that provide:
- Education in an outdoor setting and correlate with academic curriculum standards;
- Outreach and action projects in neighborhoods to engage English and Spanish speaking residents;
- Opportunities for Audubon to increase the diversity of people taking conservation action at the local level;
- Efforts to restore Baltimore’s bird habitat.
This team member will design, implement, and evaluate programs about birds and lead action for local solutions. Immersed in the community since 2002 and leading Spanish language programming since 2011, Audubon’s experience working with multicultural families in Baltimore guides us.
Patterson Park Audubon Center requires a bilingual educator to prepare and instruct conservation education programs and to lead outreach to new communities. The position involves teaching family education programs in Spanish and English as well as initiating bilingual program promotion and outreach. **Spanish fluency (both written and oral) is required.
- Prepare, deliver, and evaluate lessons, activities, and projects for adults and children. Lead all activities, field questions, and troubleshoot in Spanish or English, as appropriate.
- Coordinate with Audubon’s partner organizations to recruit new participants, lead grassroots outreach in southeast Baltimore communities, and implement action projects.
- Establish effective promotion of activities, explore new avenues for this, and listen to communities to help meet their goals as well as the Audubon mission.
- Recruit and schedule volunteers, promote and prepare materials, and supervise interactive learning programs and hands-on projects.
- Maintain accurate program records and high-quality education programs; write reports on program achievements.
- Assist with animal care, office duties, and general program outreach as needed.
- Experience in community organizing and/or conservation education, preferably in an urban setting.
- Spanish fluency is required (both written and oral).
- Experience mobilizing multicultural groups, teaching adults and children.
- Organized and efficient, with good communication skills and professional manner.
- Highly motivated, detail-oriented, independent worker, capable of working well in a team.
- Must be available for occasional weekend and evening work.
- Must have current first aid and CPR certification, or obtain such certification by start date.
- Computer skills: MS Office applications, digital photography, email, internet, social media.
- Must possess valid Maryland driver’s license.
- Physically able to accompany/lead/supervise activities on varied terrain and city streets/alleys, demonstrate/participate in activities such as bird watching/walking on trails, load/unload/haul native plants and equipment over moderate distances and up/down stairs.
