Lead Pre-K Teacher

Responsible for developing and implementing an ongoing program of activities that promote academic, social, emotional, cognitive development of each child enrolled in a pre-kindergarten class. Develops appropriate curriculum (lesson plan), assess children’s developmental growth and communicate it with the parents.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Follow general direction and perform other duties as assigned of by the Child Development Center Director.
  • Ensure the individual needs of the children are met for proper coordination of the program within the site.
  • Utilize solid judgment and discretionary skills as well as make independent decisions that will affect the YMCA.
  • Maintain positive relationships with many diverse people, including staff, parents, volunteers and program site administration and demonstrate strong public relations skills.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency and respect for the child’s background by incorporating cultural, linguistic and familial values and beliefs into the program and lesson plans.
  • Responsible for ensuring diverse program experience for children each day.
  • Understand difference between discipline and punishment. Use positive verbal and non-verbal communication with children to build trusting and stable relationships.
  • Ensure all children’s individual needs are met with dignity and respect.
  • Responsible for recording and record keeping of information required to document the growth and development of children.
  • Ensure development and completion of Developmental Portfolio’s for each child.
  • Plan periodical parent conferences to discuss children’s developmental progress, needs and interests.
  • Responsible for all aspects of quality customer service- including greeting parents, handling parent questions and concerns and staying informed of programs.
  • Serve as a relationship builder for site staff and families enhancing their commitment to the YMCA members and the mission.
  • Lead pre-K level planning processes to ensure development, implementation, and evaluation of the program.
  • Care for program equipment and monitor it daily for health and safety concerns.
  • Report all repairs, incidents and accidents to the Child Development Center Director.
  • Responsible for keeping the program clean and sanitary to insure health and safety of all children.
  • Keep a neat and clean appearance, in accordance with the standards set by the YMCA.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service provided at the Center.
  • Assist in development, training and ongoing educational requirements through orientation, training and continued education opportunities.
  • Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with the children, parents, child development personnel, and agencies associated with the YMCA Association.
  • Model, practice and carry out the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Meet the training requirements set forth by DHR and OSR.
  • Responsible for any other duties as assigned by the Child Development Director.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in early childhood education or child development.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Willingness to carry out the mission of the YMCA and its programs.
  • Ability to understand the concepts of mutual respect, caring, honesty, and responsibility in positive communications and interaction with children, parents and staff.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to plan developmentally appropriate activities and experiences within the “Creative Curriculum” learning approach.
  • Ability to interpret, as well as, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and utilize initiative, ability to be organized and to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Computer experience in a Windows environment and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to learn and utilize other software programs including Teaching Strategies Gold.
  • Work to continue personal competency through education, outside literature, seminars, etc.
  • Be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Ability to work successfully with community-based agencies and building partnerships.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement program activities.
  • Excellent skills in teaching, communication, and human relations.
  • Knowledge and experience in understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research relating to learning.
