The senior advisor for digital communications is responsible for strategizing, managing, measuring and executing digital efforts across multiple platforms to raise AARP Public Policy Institute (PPI) visibility, thought leadership and impact. They will lead PPI social media initiatives, work closely with PPI experts to create digital content, and maximize the reach of platforms that include PPI webpages, blog, newsletter and e-alerts.  This position reports to the Director of digital strategies.

PPI, one of six business units housed within AARP’s Policy, Research and International division, develops policy solutions designed to significantly improve economic security, health care and quality of life for older Americans. Its work informs and stimulates public debate on the issues people face as they age. PPI’s work also helps PRI advance AARP’s social impact agenda on health security, financial resilience and personal fulfillment.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Leads the daily management, measurement and execution of digital efforts around product releases, marketing campaigns and web presence to raise PPI visibility and thought leadership.
  • Leads the implementation of the PPI social media agenda, to include supervising interns and contingent labor.
  • Works closely with PPI authors to plan and create compelling digital content that support the enterprise mission and reach intended audiences.
  • Manages social media budget and targeting efforts to reach and grow intended audiences.
  • Maximizes reach and visibility of PPI digital platforms, including Thinking Policy blog, e-alerts and newsletter.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of AARP Policy Research & International’s (PRI)  digital strategy and communications work group.
  • Manages relationship with AARP’s enterprise digital strategy and membership team.
  • Drives content sharing across PRI and overall AARP as appropriate.
  • Works with external vendors and outside organizations as necessary.
  • Implements and maintains a comprehensive and transparent work-flow process for staff to promote content.
  • Monitors digital analytics, maintains tracking documents and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Manages PPI webpages on .org; develops and implements process to keep content current and ensure outdated material is removed.  
  • Leads internal positioning of PPI on InfoNet platform. 
  • Leads social media staff trainings as needed.
  • Stays current on online marketing and communications trends and make recommendations for improvement as needed. 
Educational Background: 
Graduate degree required in communications or closely related field.  
Skills/Experience: 
  • Candidate will be considered on overall credentials and experience, preferably eight or more years of professional experience, with emphasis on communications and digital work.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels and across multiple departments. 
  • Ability to adhere to tight deadlines and work accurately in a fast paced environment
  • Advanced proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and electronic communications. 
  • Possess strong client service orientation.
  • Ability to take initiative, willingness to learn, and be flexible.
  • A positive, proactive attitude.
