350.org is looking for a driven and experienced communicator with a strategic mindset and an empathetic and goal-oriented management style. Full professional proficiency in both English and French is essential.

This role is about building up 350Africa.org’s communications presence, bringing our work to life for audiences across Africa and leading a small but effective team of communicators.

You will lead our communications and media outreach efforts in Africa, and work with the regional team, the global communications team, local groups and partners to develop innovative and effective communications strategies that can help shift the conversation on fossil fuels, the just transition and low-carbon development regionally and in key target countries.

Areas of Responsibility: 

This role entails (but is not limited to):

  • Managing regional communications staff
  • Setting communications strategies to support 350.org’s relevant regional campaigns
  • Building and growing partnerships both with the media and allies to further spread our key messages and help grow the climate movement in Africa
  • Empowering and building up the communications capabilities of the local groups and partners we work with, through trainings, workshops and guidance
  • Speaking on behalf of the organization
  • Handling media relations and developing key content (traditional and digital)

This is a fast-paced job and you’ll be expected to cover a lot of ground. We need someone who is dynamic, creative, strategy-oriented and a smart manager who keeps calm under pressure.

Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 5-7 years of experience in a media relations or communications position for an NGO or advocacy campaign
  • Experience with developing and implementing complex communications strategies and campaigns, including running PR and communications for large-scale events or protests
  • Proven experience with effectively managing projects and teams
  • Strong writing and editing skills in English and French
  • An understanding of regional and country-level media landscapes, including key publications and outlets for environmental and climate change related news

Desired (but not required) skills and experiences

  • Interest in and understanding of global climate, energy and development debates
  • A good network of media contacts, especially journalists covering climate, energy, and the environment across Africa
  • Experience leading communication trainings and/or coaching spokespeople and media liaisons.
  • Ability to manage developers of digital and multimedia content
  • Proficiency in French and/or African languages
  • Background in journalism
  • Willingness to be available non-traditional hours as needed to ensure results
  • Willingness to travel, sometimes at short notice
  • Strong email communication, comfortable working remotely with colleagues in multiple time-zones via conference calls and other online tools
  • Experience and competency working in multicultural groups

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others.
