Under the supervision of the Fitness Director or designated Director, the Group Exercise Coordinator will provide supervision and instruction to members by listening actively, strengthening relationships, and promoting healthy living with Y members. The Coordinator will work closely with the Fitness Director to assist with day-to-day implementation of the Group Exercise program regarding membership development and retention through quality leadership and continuous follow through with member engagement. A minimum of half of total weekly hours will be designated as a Group Exercise instructor as determined by the Fitness Director and subject to change based on facility needs.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Embody an outgoing and enthusiastic personality at all times.
  • Evaluate group exercise classes (both land and water) to ensure quality, compliance and engaging delivery to members and provide coaching to instructors where necessary.
  • Over-site of class participation numbers and data entry into tracking system ClubCount.
  • Assist in developing, controlling and tracking departmental budget in accordance with center and association guidelines.
  • Monitor group exercise equipment inventory, and assist in scheduling of maintenance of equipment in partnership with Property Department.
  • Assists Fitness Director in event or program planning responsibilities.
  • Serve as first point of contact for group exercise instructors substitute requests. Assist in coordinating substitutes for instructors and fill in when necessary.
  • Serves as the lead advocate and facilitator for senior and active older adult programming at the Dancel Y.
  • Must understand basic components of a safe and effective Group Exercise Program.
  • Assist Fitness Director in day-to-day operations of Group Exercise Program including but not limited to administrative duties, recruiting and on-boarding of group exercise instructors and supervisory components as determined by Fitness Director.
  • Coach and encourage members to meet their own determined wellness goals and to continue with their program.
  • Embody sensitivity and patience in dealing with the inactive population of which could be intimidated by exercise and workout areas.
  • Listen to questions and needs of Y members and take ownership in responding back appropriately.
  • Enforce all posted Y guidelines and policies for group exercise classes.
  • Follow/Enforce all YMCA policies and procedures.
Educational Background: 
A high school diploma or GED is required. Bachelor’s degree in fitness related fields are preferred. College courses related to anatomy and physiology or related experience is accepted.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Nationally recognized accredited group exercise certification required.
  • Multiple Group Exercise certifications/specializations preferred.
  • CPR/AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen required within 60 days of hire.
  • 3+ years of management experience in health and wellness field AND/OR education in the Health and Wellness field.
