A thoroughly demonstrated track record of supporting a global trademark portfolio, as well as, copyright issues, including the enforcement, both domestic and international of certain intellectual property ("IP").

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • An IP specialist who coordinates and strategizes with attorneys, paralegals, divisions and affiliates to ensure that all required documentation and evidence necessary for IP assessment, prosecution and enforcement is provided to outside counsel in a timely, accurate, complete and professional manner on IP matters.  Initiates trademark work to outside counsel for cost savings for the whole Society. Serves as point person with outside counsel on IP matters with guidance from in-house attorneys. (30%)
  • Carries out prosecution and enforcement of IP matters, including searches, clearance, opposition and evidence collection in coordination with outside counsel; and, reviews watch notices, both domestic and international, to make initial determination regarding whether action is necessary.  Registers NGS products for copyright. (30%)
  • Works with attorneys and clients on domain name transfers and filings for Generic top-level domain (ggtlds); Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notices; researches, drafts and reviews cease and desist letters for trademark and/or copyright infringements.  Is legal representative for Zero Fox, the compliance service NGS engages to take-down unauthorized third party uses of NGS’s marks on the web and in social media. (10%)
  • Maintain all corporate IP files and coordinate dockets with outside counsel and National Geographic Partners, LLC; approves outside counsel IP invoices and other duties as directed to support division operations. (20%)
  • Reviews legal binders of documentation associated with completed media assets to confirm that rights have been properly cleared and that documentation complies with established process and protocols. (10%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree or paralegal certificate from an accredited program required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3 years of IP and trademark paralegal experience.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, eDocs and database applications;
  • Legal research skills including proficiency in use of Lexis and Westlaw and legal texts;
  • Detail oriented, organized, self-motivated and strong analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; effective telephone presence; ability to work well with others and interact directly with clients in a deadline driven environment;
  • Outstanding grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Must maintain a high degree of confidentiality in all matters of proprietary Society business and legal affairs.
  • Global IP prosecution experience.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Self-starter with ability to work in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision.
  • Computer literacy on all Microsoft Word programs, Lexis/Nexis, domestic and international IP office websites and search engines.
