Our work is focused on two areas where our outcomes can have the greatest impact for the residents of Maryland/DC: protecting clean water and tackling climate change. Our efforts span the region, from western Maryland's Central Appalachian forests to our nation's capital and beyond to the Chesapeake Bay. The Applied Scientist III (ICR) provides technical and scientific support and leadership as a subject matter resource for conservation initiatives in Conservation by Design (CbD), other conservation activities and measures of conservation success).
The Applied Scientist III (ICR) facilitates the implementation of CbD in close partnership with conservation program teams. They develop adaptive management plans, conceptual models and decision science approaches to guide conservation investment and action. They may lead a program or projects relative to conservation planning, research and stewardship. They collaborate with other scientists and institutions to enhance Conservancy practices.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- In close collaboration with program directors, lead cross-functional project teams to undertake conservation planning and decision-making, identify research needs, and evaluate the impacts of our conservation actions and advance our programmatic objectives.
- Provide training in the application of decision science tools including CbD 2.0, structured decision making, and adaptive management.
- May support other Business Units (BUs) with decision science needs.
- Support program objectives by working in a complex matrix organization environment.
- May manage a grant, contract or write a request for proposal.
- Interpret guidelines, evaluate information and modify processes to adapt and support the unique circumstances for each program.
- Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and ensuring workflow.
- Must work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Experience in designing and facilitating planning and decision science processes
- Experience in training others in common approaches to decision science
- Experience manipulating, analyzing and interpreting statistical or environmental data.
- Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
- Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals.
- Experience leading or participating on cross functional teams.
- Experience managing complex projects including the financial aspect and coordinating the work of peers and partners.
- Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- PhD and 3-5 years of relevant experience highly desirable.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; builds relationships easily
- Strong knowledge of common software applications.
- Proven negotiation skills.
