As a member of Audubon’s Finance Team, the Finance Associate is the business partner for Program Directors and will assist them in managing the day-to-day financial operations of their departments. The successful candidate will have an excellent grasp of financial and accounting concepts, and is able to communicate financial information clearly and concisely. He or she will thrive in a fast-paced environment and is able to juggle multiple projects with a positive attitude. The position requires sophisticated financial systems skills (especially budgeting systems) and the ability to create and analyze budget and variance reports. The Finance Associate is responsible for financial support, administration, and knowledge for New York Headquarters and Washington, D.C. based programs including Central Services, Development, Content, International Alliances, Policy, Education, and Science.
The Finance Associate will report to the Director of Finance and Planning and will be based at Audubon’s New York City Headquarters.
- Partner with leaders of Audubon’s national programs to provide timely, accurate and insightful financial information for their programs
- Provide financial analysis, support, and reporting guidance for all specified programs
- Provide day to day support of National Program Directors in managing the financial operations of their work
- Responsible for all technical aspects of annual budgets and reforecasts
- Assist in preparation of long-term operating budgets and monitor and evaluate actual performance versus budget on a monthly basis
- Become the subject matter expert for assigned departments and take ownership of all aspects of financial activity within those departments
- Ensure that all financial systems contain accurate information, including payroll, grants,
- Work closely with the grants team to ensure proper coding for grant related activity
- Provide analysis of contracts and invoices for accuracy
- Process invoices for departments to ensure proper coding
- Ensure that invoices are expensed in correct fiscal period
- Track vendor payments to make sure invoices are received and paid in a timely manner; following up with departments/or vendors as necessary
- Ensure each specified program has provided all proper documentation for closing the fiscal year and follow through to ensure all year end closing entries have been recorded and the obligation(s) of each program restriction are upheld in accordance with policies and guidelines
- Prepare contract forms and journal entries for specified programs
- Provide excellent customer service to a variety of stakeholders
- Provide training and advice for new staff
- 3+ years financial/accounting experience in a nonprofit organization, working with diverse funding sources, including public funding a must
- Direct experience in nonprofit budgeting required, with experience in a decentralized organization preferred
- Experience providing excellent customer service to a wide range of constituents
- Strong financial systems expertise, including both general ledger and budgeting systems; experience with Financial Edge or Prophix a plus
- Must be well organized, have meticulous attention to detail, and excellent oral and written communication, presentation and management skills
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, and strong knowledge of other Microsoft Office programs
