Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is seeking a Full-Time Accounting Manager to join our Accounting and Finance team. This position is based at our New York City Office.
Areas of Responsibility:
Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Accounting Manager is responsible for the reliable and professional operations of the Finance unit. This position manages the general accounting function, including the records and operation of accounting systems, and the gathering and reporting of financial information. The role oversees two to three professional accounting team members.
- Oversee and manages core accounting functions including revenue, cash management and accounts payable.
- Manage the monthly closing process to ensure all tasks are performed accurately within a set timeframe.
- Record/review journal entries for payroll, investments, depreciation, accruals, prepaids, asset purchases and other complex transactions.
- Identify and investigate fluctuations in financial information, working with program personnel, as needed.
- Research unusual transactions and bring inconsistencies to the attention of the Financial Controller.
- Coordinate and prepare internal and external financial statements on a monthly and quarterly basis.
- Assist in implementing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls and accounting policies and procedures.
- Maintain chart of accounts to support financial reporting.
- Evaluate and optimize the performance of accounting and related systems. Maximize the usage of complex financial software applications (Blackbaud FE, SAP Concur, Paycom Payroll, LongView, Questica’s PowerPlan budgeting, etc.).
- Oversees restricted funds and reviews spending for compliance with grant terms/donor restrictions
- Collaborate cross-functionally with departments on various initiatives impacting the financial reporting of the organization.
- Prepare/review audit workpapers, financial statements on annual basis, correspond with auditors as needed.
- Contribute to the preparation of the IRS Form 990 and ensures that tax regulations and registrations are being adhered to.
- Assist with the development of unit budgets and work closely with unit managers.
- Advise departmental program and development officials on accounting matters.
- Communicating and coordinating with members, vendors, donors, bankers, as appropriate.
- Coordinates accounting software updates with IT as necessary.
- Work on ad hoc projects as needed.
Educational Background:
BA/BS in Accounting with approximately 8 years of relevant experience or advanced degree and at least 3 years supervisory experience
Skills/Experience:
- Nonprofit fund accounting experience preferred
- Strong, comprehensive understanding of US GAAP
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to act as a change agent and drive incremental process improvements
- Highly organized and maintains the highest standards of accuracy and precision
- Collaborative team player with a hands-on approach to guiding and supervising junior staff
- Ability to cultivate a team and develops professional rapport internally and externally.
- A self-starter who is driven and self-motivated, works on routine tasks with minimal oversight
- Diplomatic skills to obtain trust and cooperation from others to resolve problems, manage projects or achieve appropriate solutions
- Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
- Ability to handle a variety of key initiatives concurrently
- Knowledge of a relevant non-profit financial reporting software system at an intermediate to expert level.
- Expert level MS Excel skills and intermediate level skills on all other MS Office applications.
