Reporting to the Chief Conservation Officer and Senior Advisor to the CEO, the Chief of Staff is responsible for ensuring, on a day-to-day basis, that conservation priorities and the specific steps needed to execute those strategies are implemented by the conservation team and shared with the entire organization. In so doing, the Chief of Staff will guide and steward members of the Conservation senior management team on a regular basis and produce communications that inform the Executive Team and the entire organization of our progress toward our conservation objectives.
Areas of Responsibility:
- The Chief of Staff will have a primary role in developing and updating the three-year Conservation business plans and will work with the finance team to produce associated annual and three-year budgets. Included in this role are assessing new directions for the organization, moving its current activities towards ones that better support the identified long-term goals, shaping three-year implementation objectives and milestones with senior vice presidents and strategy leaders, and empowering and holding staff accountable for reaching measurable results. The Chief of Staff will work with IT and other departments to ensure new technologies and systems support conservation priorities and contribute to their execution.
- The Chief of Staff will organize and coordinate semi-monthly conservation strategy leader meetings, monthly conservation leadership team meetings and quarterly conservation strategy update meetings with leaders of other departments. He/she will ensure that action items from these meetings are completed and that meeting agendas are cumulative, building on the progress of previous meetings.
- The Chief of Staff will be responsible for communicating with senior leaders, members of the conservation team, the Network Leadership Team and the entire organization. This includes monthly updates on progress and challenges for the Executive Team, monthly Chief Conservation Officer updates for the organization, regular updates for the Network Leadership Team. This person also will produce materials for board meetings, speeches and other meetings, and serve on development team semi-monthly meetings.
- The Chief of Staff, in conjunction with Audubon's Chief Conservation Officer and the Human Resources team will have the primary role in developing the human capital of the conservation team, ensuring that management systems are in place to develop and mentor a diverse workforce as well as devoting time to staff morale and motivation levels.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree required, Advanced Degree preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- 10+ years’ experience in a progressive, matrixed operations atmosphere with a high degree of latitude, preferably within a non-profit environment.
- A proven track record of relevant experience working with senior level individuals; experience building relationships.
- Political savvy - both internally & externally; able to monitor the pulse of staff.
- Superior project management experience.
- Collaborative - builds rapport with others easily and establishes credibility.
- Diplomatic, patient, and discreet, but sufficient and decisive.
- Demonstrated ability to lead without authority in every case, but with a high-level of influence.
- Strong written & communication skills.
- Prior experience as a chief of staff or similar support/leadership role
- Prior experience successfully managing remote staff
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
