The Assistant Director is responsible for hiring, training and evaluating seasonal Program Instructors.  Additionally, the Assistant Director is responsible for creating, planning and implementing a variety of Berkshire Outdoor Center programs, including leadership development programs for high schools and colleges, environmental education programs for middle and elementary schools, family camps, women's wellness weekends, programs for corporate groups, and facility groups.  The Assistant Director will supervise, train and evaluate full-time Program Coordinators to deliver these programs.  Additionally, the Assistant Director will supervise the operation of Becket Day Camp and Berkshire Happy Camp - including staffing, program design and implementation.  The Assistant Director will supervise, train and evaluate a seasonal Becket Day Camp and Happy camp  Directors to deliver these program.  

Areas of Responsibility: 

Principle Activities (Program Planning):

  • Supervise, manage and evaluate PCs
  • Ensure quality control planning, organization and systemization of  BOC Program with BOC Executive Director.
  • Create, develop and manage BOC curriculum.
  • Meet regularly with the BOC Executive Director and PCs to share updates, information and planning.
  • Maintain open communication with PCs and BOC Executive Director and file copy of all written communication.  

Principle Activities (Program Implementation):

  • Manage quality control of BOC’s program through supervision, coaching and mentoring of Program Coordinators – assisting them in the monitoring of staff work habits, performance evaluation, liaisons with group leaders, and assisting in making corrections where needed.
  • Serve as the staff member on call as assigned and respond to any emergencies or situations promptly & professionally.   

Principle Activities (Staffing):

  • Supervise and evaluate Program Coordinators, in conjunction with BOC Executive Director
  • Recruit, hire train and evaluate Program Coordinators, Program Instructors and Becket Day Camp and Berkshire Happy Camp Staff
  • Assist Program Coordinators in supervising and evaluating Program Instructors and facilitation of staff meetings
  • Perform staff check-in and check-out procedures, supervising staff in keeping housing clean
  • Track, progress and maintain the professional growth of the Program Coordinators
  • Function as the primary for Program Instructor onboarding and exit interviewing

Principle Activities (General):

  • Function as an effective member of the staff team and the entire department & organization.
  • Communicate effectively to staff and supervisor.
  • Perform all assigned duties in an enthusiastic and timely manner.
  • Maintain general facility and equipment upkeep on a daily basis.  Maintain facility for safety and cleanliness.
  • Assist with maintaining compliance with all ACA accreditation requirements and Commonwealth regulations.   
  • Work to develop a leading edge program which meets the needs of the clientele of BCCYMCA.
Educational Background: 
Have a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, recreation or in a related field.   
Skills/Experience: 
  • Have a minimum of 2 years full time experience working in in education, recreation or in a related field, preferably in outdoor education
  • Have a commitment to the mission of BCCYMCA and an ability to implement this mission to guests and staff.  
  • Have excellent communication and organizational skills, confidence and willingness to interact in a positive and motivational with all
  • Be flexible, patient and have strong initiative.  
  • Be a customer service oriented problem solver.
