The Coordinator, Communications will be responsible for supporting communications efforts of the Government Relations and Policy department.  This will involve coordinating internal and external communciations to advance the advocacy efforts of the department at the federal level and work with the state team to strengthen state alliances.

 This position will be based at YMCA of the USA's Washington, D.C. office location.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Coordinates issues management, message development and other communication needs of the department
  • Manages, coordinates and writes communications internally via newsletter, intranet, and other communications vehicles
  • Coordinates web-based grassroots communications outreach and maintain web-based database; helps develop and implement effective grassroots advocacy strategies – specifically those focused on social media
  • Supports State team and State Alliance communications needs
  • Manages production of printed materials for the department
  • Develops and maintains government relations and policy content for ymca.net, Intranet, and social media sites
  • Serves on team responsible for increasing the organization’s influence with and visibility with print, radio, TV, and web-based news media outlets
  • Supports public relations and marketing efforts
  • Researches issues and prepares Issue Briefs
  • Manages posting and monitoring of content on Exchange per subject matter experts requests and knowledge management governance policies
  • Develops and execute a content plan for your designated Exchange site to further knowledge sharing in line with knowledge management governance policies
  • Periodically write press releases, media advisories and speeches as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Director, Government Relations Communications
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in the field of Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or Political Science is required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in the government via Capitol Hill or the Executive Branch or in a complex public relations/national communications setting is required
  • Must have the ability to travel approximately 5% of the time
  • Experience in corporate, agency, government and non-profit public affairs environments a plus
  • Exceptional written, oral and written communications skills is required
  • Proven experience in editing written material and news releases is required
  • Must possess knowledge and experience of strategic internal communications to a large movement or membership based organization (i.e. use of internet, extranet, magazines and newsletters)
  • Experience with social media is a plus

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $59,000.00 - $65,000.00
