The New York Climate Mitigation Director manages the New York Division work in support of achieving The Nature Conservancy’s climate mitigation goals. The Climate Mitigation Director leads a cross-functional team engaged in science, policy, conservation, marketing, communications and fundraising efforts to achieve outcomes in New York and beyond.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The New York Climate Mitigation Director provides leadership to a team developing and implementing strategies to mitigate climate change. The team builds strategic external partnerships and works with other business units and teams within The Conservancy to accomplish its goals. They will help set the vision for The Nature Conservancy’s work on climate mitigation in New York and should be a thought leader helping adaptively manage the work of the team.  The New York Climate Mitigation Director determines the general direction, outcomes, and scope of the work; provides advice, guidance, direction and/or supervision for individuals working on the team strategies; and ensures linkage and leverage between work in New York and North America and/or Global conservation programs. They provide recommendations to the New York Division Conservation Leadership Team and Executive Team and will be a primary point of contact for fundraising, communications and finance. The New York Climate Mitigation Director serves as a member of the New York Division Conservation Management Team. They will manage financial resources for the climate mitigation team in collaboration with the finance team and appropriate Conservation Leadership Team members.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Geographic size and scope is that of a larger, complex business unit and/or a program that requires cross-boundary work and relationships.
  • Supervises staff at remote locations.
  • Establishes and maintains optimal performance standards within budget.
  • Writes or responds to requests for proposal (RFPs) for grant/contract funding for program.
  • Frequently makes independently strategic decision based on analysis, ambiguous information and context.
  • Navigates complex issues, negotiates in a political environment. 
  • Frequent travel domestically, especially within New York State, evening and weekend hours.      
  • Develops and manages a strategic plan for the New York Climate Mitigation Team.
  • Leads the development of annual conservation strategies and activities to advance the teams’ goals coordinating with the finance department to establish annual workplans and budgets.
  • Directs the team’s implementation of the conservation work
  • Provides advice, guidance, direction, supervision, and trouble-shooting for individuals engaged in performing climate mitigation work.
  • Makes recommendations on material changes to strategies and direction of the work within the priority.
  • Develops relationships with public and private partners in order to advance the Conservancy’s goals.
  • Identifies, secures, and leverages financial support from government and private sources for conservation priorities; writes government grants and foundation proposals.
  • Exemplifies and builds a team approach and atmosphere.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS degree and 7 years’ experience in conservation, energy or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.  
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups, and/or government agencies.                                       
  • Experience negotiating.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation
  • Experience in climate mitigation and/or energy policy making, regulation, markets, business and/or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.
  • Ability to develop practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.
  • Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives or related field.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English.
  • Politically savvy.
