We truly believe that Managers of Teacher Leadership and Development (MTLD) are the center and heart of Teach For America’s work. You are an educator, advocate and systems change leader charged with developing and cultivating teachers’ leadership skills and mindsets to foster educational equity and excellence. You will coach corps members towards expanding their perspectives and knowledge to go beyond traditional expectations to advance the academic and personal growth of their students. You will accomplish this through partnering with communities, students and families as well as the broader network of MTLDs across the country. You will also support broader regional and organizational priorities, such as: selecting new corps members, encouraging alumni to join our staff, and supporting regional alumni initiatives. MTLDs report to the executive director.

70% of your time is spent working with corps members, students, and families

  • Lead with a commitment to diversity, equity & inclusiveness
  • Coach and empower corps members
  • Coach corps members around diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, to ensure they are making progress in their development and integrating equitable practices in their classrooms.
  • Build meaningful relationships with school-level staff, administration, and people in the community that may offer differing perspectives, to build a culture that celebrates unique contributions and unites people around shared values and common purpose.
  • Help corps members understand the community in which they teach and provide strategies for them to build meaningful relationships with multiple partners within the community.
  • Observe corps members live in action to help them connect their values and beliefs to their work, stay centered on their classroom visions, and learn critical instructional and leadership skills.

25% of your time is spent with our team strategizing, planning, learning, etc.

  • Have a deep knowledge of culturally sustaining teaching practices.
  • Facilitate small group sessions and design learning experiences that offer best practices and create communities of collaboration.

5% of your time is your own personal development towards your personal and our regional vision.

  • Deepen your understanding of your own identity by engaging in personal development around diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of two years of experience achieving ambitious outcomes as a classroom teacher in a Native community
  • Experience in adult facilitation (PLC and large group facilitation)
  • Coaching experience
  • Have a deep commitment to Teach For America's mission, core values, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness.

Work Demands

  • Flexibility to work weekends (as frequently as once a month) and evenings to coach corps members
  • Hours vary and are dependent on progress towards our regional goals
  • Independent travel to multiple school sites throughout the day that may be significant distances from one another
  • Some regions require a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one before the first day of employment with no major driving violations in the last three years (varies by region)
  • Potentially travel to at least two Teach For America conferences each year
