The Director, Member Partnership maintains and grows cooperative and consultative relationships between NPR and Member Station management teams to achieve a productive partnership and build the value of NPR membership, and to ensure NPR’s financial health.  The Director is responsible for informing and influencing collaborative strategic initiatives, and programming and service strategies.  The Director collaborates with and advises staff across NPR Divisions for many critical cross-divisional and external projects.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Reports to the Vice President, Member Partnership. 
  • With the VP Member Partnership and NPR senior team, maintains a primary relationship with key leadership colleagues at the top 25 revenue-producing Member stations. 
  • Develops and directs approaches and processes to build trusting, consultative, engaged and productive relationships with stations and public radio system stakeholders. Strengthen and coordinate station support across NPR. 
  • Provides independent judgment and insight to take advantage of opportunities or to resolve issues among public radio stakeholders and within the organization. 
  • Maintains station relationship data, and presents it as needed in the form of dashboards, reports, presentations and meetings. Advises NPR leadership team on the status of station business relationships as needed. 
  • With the VP of Member Partnership and other senior NPR leaders, participates in pricing analysis, strategy and modeling, and oversees pricing negotiations. 
  • Contributes to the development and support of core strategic work in key Content, Digital, Development and Communications/Branding. 
  • Oversees development of stakeholder messaging about NPR content, services and initiatives; and delivery those messages to station partners and stakeholders. 
  • Supervises and directs the team responsible for establishing a consistent business dialogue with designated station management teams in support of NPR and stations’ efforts to build audience and grow revenue across platforms. Achieves program revenue, program carriage, digital product revenue and digital services adoption goals. 
  • For designated Member station group, assesses opportunities for placement of NPR programming content and digital products on station platforms. Gathers pertinent financial information, negotiates fees, and devises and operationalizes the onboarding workflow for individual station’s adoption of these programs and products. 
  • Accountable for the processing and delivery of legal agreements pertaining to the business relationship with designated stations.
  • Contributes to the development of compliance and waiver plans in support of business agreements with Member Stations. Discusses license compliance rubrics and performance with station partners and NPR’s Legal department as needed. 
  • Maintains thorough working knowledge of every NPR broadcast program, digital product and service, and the value proposition each one offers to station partners. 
  • Assesses revenue potential for content and digital products and services, and develops revenue goals. Leads the Member Partnership team to achieve quantitative and qualitative goals. 
  • Keeps current on industry trends via conference attendance, trade publications, social media and direct contact with colleagues and other broadcast professionals. 
  • Work with VP Member Partnership to plan and ensure productive NPR Annual and A-Reps meetings. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 
Educational Background: 
College degree in related field(s). Advanced degree desirable.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 8-10 years of relevant professional experience, with proven management-level experience, preferably in a media setting. 
  • The Director will bring the following addition attributes to the position: initiative, creativity, ability to thrive and lead in a complex, ambiguous environment, strong presentation skills. 
  • Outstanding organizational, analytical, and verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to influence others. 
  • Advanced understanding of the issues facing the industry and their implications for NPR, Member stations and the public radio system. Demonstrated knowledge of the rapidly changing, competitive media environment and its strategic challenges and implications. 
  • Demonstrated success leading a team to manage client relationships and achieve strategic objectives. 
  • Demonstrated experience developing and sustaining successful partnerships. 
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects and initiatives – internally and externally, across functions. 
  • Ability to work effectively with senior level executives internal and external to the organization. 
  • Relationship-based service/marketing experience preferred. 
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Power Point and Excel required; familiarity with Salesforce environment strongly preferred. 
  • Environmental knowledge: Thorough understanding of NPR’s role as a journalism institution, national producer and membership organization; knowledge of the public radio system. 
  • Business knowledge: Awareness and basic working knowledge of broadcast and digital underwriting or advertising; familiarity with broadcast and digital audience metrics and CRM.
