This AmeriCorps position will engage community members in implementation of the Verde River Flow and Habitat Restoration Initiative with the Conservancy and partners at Friends of Verde River Greenway and Verde Natural Resource Conservation District. This initiative is aimed at improving riparian health by removing non-native invasive plants and restoring flow to Verde River by partnering with agricultural water users. Work will be focused in the Verde Valley but opportunities for travel will occur.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Conduct stream flow measurement in Verde River, its tributaries and irrigation ditches and maintain database of Verde River data.
- Perform basic data analysis of flow data and maintain database.
- Service flow gaging stations and automated head gates with supervision.
- Organize volunteer work events in the Verde Valley area with partner organizations.
- Work with local partners to assist in implementation in invasive plant controls and restoration in the Verde Watershed.
- Assist conservation plans for properties that lead to improvements in streamflow and riparian health by improvements in land and water management.
- Perform stewardship duties on the Shield Ranch. Residence in the house is required for easy accessibility to the Verde River area
Responsibilities and Scope:
- Receives detailed instructions to complete required tasks
- May work under close supervision or infrequent supervision
- Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including other staff, volunteers, and partners.
- May resolve management problems independently as delegated.
- Consult with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of unusual or complex problems.
- Monitor the progress of work groups toward achieving management goals.
- Consults supervisor on unusual or complex issues
- Make day-to-day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
- Ability to convey work instructions to other team members, including Conservancy staff, Governmental agency staff, irrigation ditch owners and community volunteers.
- Ability to function productively as a member or leader of a work team.
- The Conservation Practitioner II may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain, and physical ability to traverse and hike over rough terrain.
Educational Background:
High school diploma, some college and conservation experience desirable
Skills/Experience:
- Physically able to traverse and hike over rough terrain
- Capable of considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
- Experience in written and verbal communications skills
- Experience with MS Office, including Access
- Strong interest in environmental conservation
- Possess and maintain valid driver's license
- AmeriCorps members must be U.S. Citizens, U.S. Nationals or Legal Permanent Residents
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Experience following instructions from supervisors
- Strong interest in the mission and activities of The Nature Conservancy
