“Weekend Edition” keeps the NPR audience company every Saturday and Sunday morning and has been a member of the elite group of NPR flagship newsmagazine programs for 30 years. We cover the news of the day, we put the news of the week into context and we anticipate the news yet to be made. The Weekend Edition team is a tight-knit and collaborative bunch of smart and creative producers, editors and hosts. We’re looking for a dynamic, experienced journalist who, along with the Executive Producer, will ensure that Weekend Edition is at the leading edge of the conversation across a range of issues.
- Tracks the ongoing flow of news and drives editorial coverage for Weekend Edition; acts as liaison with NPR desks on developing stories.
- Assists Executive Producer in monitoring the program for editorial and journalistic integrity, continuity and quality of air product.
- Assists Executive Producer in developing and implementing various program-related objectives and special projects.
- Supervises regular and temporary program staff by creating and managing work schedules and assignments that, when possible, provide training to further staff development.
- Provides guidance to staff and monitors and evaluates staff performance.
- Minimum ten years’ experience as a news reporter, producer or editor including work on:
- Breaking news coverage and daily news coverage including the generation of story ideas and the research and development of such stories.
- Feature reports, including the development of topics and the organization and presentation of those reports.
- Considerable knowledge of current events, including international and domestic news.
- Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and understanding of sound organizational development, management and supervisory principles.
- Proven ability to consistently work with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
- Ability and willingness to work weekend shifts and varied days and hours as needed.
