The Alexandria Area YMCA Board of Directors is looking for a leader who embodies the core values of the YMCA. The Board of Directors is seeking a visionary leader who can build strong relationships in the communities we serve to position this YMCA as an indispensable community asset while continuing to create a culture of excellence within the YMCA. This leader should be able to create ways and avenues to communicate the mission and impact of the Y, promote the programs and services and create open and welcoming environment.

This leadership role requires undeniable integrity, strong communication skills and competencies including, but not limited to: fiscal management, staff development, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and development; strategic planning, strategic marketing plan, membership & program planning, and facility management. The CEO/Executive Director will be visible in the community and active in the development of meaningful community partnerships, positioning the Y as a strong charitable partner.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Key Deliverables and requirements for the CEO/Executive Director include, but are not limited to:

  • Create a Culture of Excellence:  Actively interact and communicate with YMCA members, donors, staff and volunteers.  Create a culture of excellence within the YMCA and act as an ambassador for the mission and vision for the YMCA within the community.  Be seen and respected as a leader within the community, proactively creating collaborations while always upholding the highest standards of the values of the YMCA and the YMCA’s heritage. 
  • Lead and Develop a Staff Team: Create a plan to build unity, encourage teamwork, set operational goals tied to a strategic plan, hold staff accountable, and foster individual staff development.  Ensure that staff performance and development leads to superior outcomes in programs, member satisfaction and community engagement.  Evaluate the current strengths and weaknesses of all key staff and create a plan for individual staff development, including key changes in organizational structure and key roles as needed.
  • Lead a Culture of Philanthropy: Effectively lead the organization to embrace a member and donor-centered atmosphere. Assure that everyone in the organization, from the front line staff to the board chair, understands that philanthropy and fund development are critical to the organizational health and that each individual has a role in that process. Serve as the leader who supports the organization in its fundraising efforts by establishing a plan for how the organization will raise contributed dollars for service growth and keep membership and programs affordable for all. Position the Y as a charity of choice by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the Y with community leaders and donors.
  • Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Develop a plan of action to address any specific areas that are in need of enrichment or development including, but not limited to, setting priorities, enhancing the operation, increasing marketing and awareness, and enhancing programs and services.  Work with the board and the appropriate YMCA staff to develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives.  Remain fully informed of all operational issues and have the keen ability to quickly address any issues that may arise as well as forecast future needs.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience in preparing and managing a budget.
  • Fundraising experience with documented results
  • Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with the YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  • Grant writing experience with documented results
  • Excellent written and verbal communications.
  • Personal Values Consistent with the YMCA mission.

Preferred Attributes:

  • A track record for building and leveraging community partnerships and alliances to achieve organizational goals.  Experience in securing grants and other creative revenue streams.  Strong leadership expertise.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification
    Note: Candidates not already in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain this certification via the Y-USA Training and Leadership Development criterion.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary Range:  $75,000 - $100,000, Salary is commensurate with experience

Benefits:Retirement contributions - 12% (7% YMCA paid - 5% employee paid).  The YMCA will provide a comprehensive hospitalization, major medical and dental insurance for eligible employees and their dependents.  Specific details are outlined in the employee handbook.

Relocation:  Relocation assistance will be provided if moving to the Alexandria, MN area. Board prefers the candidate lives within the service area.
