The Nature Conservancy’s Reef Resilience Network Science Lead will work to develop and synthesize new restoration and resilience science to support capacity building resources and opportunities for coral reef resource managers. The Reef Resilience Network is a partnership effort to build capacity of coral reef mangers worldwide through a variety of online resources, webinars, and trainings. The Science Lead will support many facets of the Reef Resilience Network including: technical and writing assistance for development of online resources and courses, program proposals, and network communications (newsletters). The Science Lead will support and share restoration work from TNC Caribbean Coral Innovation Hubs. There may be up to 4-5 weeks of travel each year.
The Science Lead conducts scientific surveys and research, records data, writes reports and develops proposals in order to support and develop operations of the Reef Resilience Network and the sharing of resources from the Caribbean Coral Hubs. The Science Lead will support development of capacity building resources and opportunities for coral reef resource managers, planning and implementation of Network projects such as online course, webinar series, website updates and development, case studies. S/he will lead coordination with key restoration partners to implement Reef Resilience Network and TNC Caribbean restoration strategies.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
Synthesize and share coral reef resilience science best practices across the globe
- Enhance and maintain the Reef Resilience Toolkit module content based on new practices, science and resources from partners
- Identify and develop new Toolkit content on coral reef restoration and resilience, update current content with new science and resources
- Lead development of coral restoration strategic planning and design guidance for managers
- Coordinate translation of modules and online courses into Spanish and French
- Identify and form partnerships with experts to contribute to Network activities
- Lead development implementation of the restoration online course with Conservation Training staff and RR Coordinator
- Support in-person trainings with mentored online courses for partner organizations and TNC regions
- Identify capacity building needs in different regions and other trainings that could use a mentored online portion
Support and share restoration work from TNC Caribbean Coral Innovation Hubs
- Support Hub efforts to build local capacity through trainings, webinars, mentored online course, and learning exchanges between Hubs and partner organizations
- Support Hubs in serving as bridges to the international community through capacity building by disseminating knowledge, lessons learned, and resources through Reef Resilience restoration module, online course, webinar series, case studies, newsletter articles, and social media posts
Coordinate with key restoration partners to implement Reef Resilience Network and TNC Caribbean restoration strategies.
- Support partnership with Society of Ecological Restoration (SER) to develop trainings for restoration practitioners
- Coordinate workshops/projects with partners to address restoration priorities
- Coordinate with CRC Working Group chairs and participate in monthly calls
- Provide communications support for partnership with the Coral Restoration Consortium including website updates and maintenance and 3-4 restoration webinars (annually)
- Co-chair Managers Working Group to lead development of new resources
- Work with RRAP to support execution of joint activities and obtain expert reviews from RRAP researchers and staff
- Support knowledge sharing between restoration partners
Support development of capacity building resources and opportunities for coral reef resource managers
- May lead staff, interns or volunteers on a project basis.
- May manage a grant, contract or request for proposal.
- Must work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience leading and working with cross functional teams.
- Experience synthesizing, interpreting and communicating scientific information.
- Experience preparing reports of findings.
- Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
- Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Coral reef ecology, marine ecology, coral reef restoration,
- Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
