Full Time Head Lifeguard

Head Lifeguard full time position.  Must be able to cover a minimum of 3 early morning opening shifts per week.  Thirty five hours per week will be in a lifeguarding capacity with 5 hours per week dedicated to administrative duties.  The Head Lifeguard will assist the Aquatic Director with planning and delivering Lifeguard In-Service training, conducting staff evaluations, and weekly scheduling for lifeguard staff.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Be professional, courteous, alert and diplomatic.  Guard all swimmers; eliminate unsafe practices and physical hazards
  • Maintain general pool rules
  • Administer proper first aid and carry out emergency procedures in the event of an accident
  • Participate as a part of the Aquatics staff team in providing a safe and enjoyable environment
  • A lifeguard must be wearing a swimsuit, YMCA staff shirt and have a whistle and hip pack with pocket mask at all times.  Caps, sweatpants or shoes are not proper attire
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to shift start time and check your area for hazardous conditions and that all your equipment is at your station
  • Each lifeguard is responsible for enforcing all pool rules.  You must know all the rules and be able to explain why they are important
  • When unable to work, lifeguards are responsible for obtaining their own substitute.  A sub sheet must be filled out and submitted to the Aquatic Director or Aquatic Coordinator for approval at least 24 hours prior to shift
  • The lifeguard is responsible for the cleanliness of the entire pool area, including deck, gutters, hallways, staff office and any other areas designated by the Director(s).  Please pick up any paper, gum, hair, pins, etc. in pool areas and wash down the deck at closing
  • Maintain accurate pool chemical readings and logging daily attendance.  Test the pool at the designated times and notify the Director if readings are exceptionally low or high
  • Lifeguards are not permitted to take part in any activity, which would distract them from watching the pool.  This includes reading, doing homework, instructing or talking for extended periods with either members or other guards/instructors.  No personal calls will be allowed to/from the pool
  • In the event that an accident occurs, the lifeguard is responsible for filling out an accident report.  These reports must be legible, detailed and filled out completely every time the first aid kit is used.  Any incident requiring medical attention should be brought to a supervisor’s attention
  • Position yourself to view the entire pool area easily.  Pool must be scanned every ten seconds.  Scan both above and below surface of the water at all times.  Must be able to respond quickly to an emergency (within 10 seconds)
  • Lifeguard may never sit on pool deck or bench.  Guard should be in lifeguard chair or walking with proper equipment at all times
  • Know your guarding schedule in advance.  There should be no problems or conflicting social affairs
  • Lifeguards are responsible for being in the pool and ready to work at the time designated on the schedule
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings, these meetings are mandatory and not attending will be reflected in your evaluation and scheduling on hours.
  • Provide training and guidance to new lifeguard staff
  • Keep informed of all changes in the schedule and upcoming events
  • All notices will be posted.  Please read notices and act accordingly
  • All staff are required to give two (2) weeks written notice before terminating their employment with the YMCA
  • Assume all other duties and assignments as deemed appropriate by Aquatic Director(s) or any Professional Staff
  • The Aquatic Director(s) office is always open to you but please respect it as a private office
  • Attend a personal evaluation at least 1 time/year and be accountable for performance
  • Ensure that pool staffing is within YMCA standards before leaving the area or performing maintenance items.  Ensure security upon arrival and departure.
  • Promote YMCA Aquatic Programs whenever possible
  • Understand the YMCA Character Development Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility and implement them in your daily activities
  • Supervision responsibilities include:  All patrons in pool area and mentoring / training of Lifeguard staff
  • Work with Aquatic Director and Coordinator to facilitate In-Service trainings for lifeguards
  • Work the opening pool shift at least 3 mornings per week
  • Assist Aquatic Director with weekly lifeguard schedule
  • Assist with evaluation of lifeguard staff for Initial Reviews (within first 90 days)
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must be a minimum of 20 years of age
  • Have a minimum of 3 years experience
  • An acceptable level of physical fitness to perform in pool activities, rescues and survival skills
  • Hold a current YMCA Lifeguard Certification and/or hold a Red Cross Lifeguard Certification while fulfilling a YMCA Certification
  • Hold current Professional Rescuer CPR, First Aid, Oxygen Administration and Automated External Defibrillator Certifications
  • Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred or able to obtain 6 months
  • Knowledge in current methods of neck and back injuries and how to apply the backboard
  • Be dependable and reliable
