The Corporate Communications Associate supports a range of activities in NPR’s corporate communications department. The role has a particular focus on NPR’s internal and corporate messaging. Duties include extensive writing, editing, and proofreading of corporate communications materials; photography and video work for use in internal communications; support to NPR’s audience and community relations activities such as giving tours and special events; and administrative support across the Corporate Communications functions.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Be an essential part of the team that tells the NPR story to our internal stakeholders. Create clear, creative, and compelling copy for use in a variety of corporate communications channels.
  • Provide daily maintenance and support to NPR’s internal communications platforms:
  • Daily Newsletter: Research and draft operational updates and feature articles to appear in NPR’s daily staff newsletter, Intranet, and digital message boards. Assemble copy and graphics for the newsletter in the digital newsletter platform every day.
  • NPR Intranet: Post content and multimedia features to the platform daily; manage quality control for news articles and other pages on the Intranet; manage the “best bets” in the Intranet search function; and maintain the Intranet company-wide calendar.
  • Digital Displays: Edit and post content to the digital displays including cafeteria menus, operational updates, and staff reminders.
  • Meetings: Provide support for all-staff meetings including managing remote listening, and preparing presentation materials such as PowerPoint slides and handouts.
  • Develop multi-media content to be used in a variety of internal channels. Photograph internal events and activities and film and edit short video features on NPR activities for use in NPR’s internal communications and some outward-facing communications.
  • Manage the editorial calendar for corporate communications messaging across internal platforms.
  • Provide daily copyediting and proofreading support to the Corporate Communications team.
  • Act as a liaison between NPR and the public by providing tours of NPR facilities for the general public, visiting specialty groups, events, stations, VIPs and others. Make contributions and offer updates to the tour script.
  • During periods of high listener email volume, provide support to NPR’s audience relations team by researching and drafting responses to listener emails.
  • Support Corporate Communications projects and activities as needed.
  • Provide administrative support to the Corporate Communications team as needed.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in either marketing, communication or a related field, or equivalent working experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 1-3 years of experience working in communications and public relations, or a related field.
  • Extremely strong creative and corporate writing skills. Ability to make even the most mundane topic interesting to a workforce full of journalists who know a good story when they see one.
  • Extremely strong copyediting and proofreading skills. Ability to spot errors in punctuation and grammar, and ability to tighten up clunky prose quickly.
  • Proven experience managing multiple projects of varying levels of complexity and difficulty across organizational units under deadline.
  • Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in public. Comfort with public speaking and giving tours to small groups (approx. 20 people).
  • Must be able to work independently, juggle priorities, and set personal objectives to meet team goals.
  • The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to work well with the public, as well as with a variety of people at all levels across organizational departments and divisions.
  • Strong understanding of (and/or enthusiasm for) NPR’s programming and mission.
  • Exceptional attention-to-detail in all matters related to the position.
  • Ability to work with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, content management systems, and databases.
  • Ability to work effectively in a busy environment with diverse personalities and needs, and pressing deadlines.
  • A positive attitude and a go-getter.
  • Basic proficiency with photography / video equipment and processes, as well as basic photo/video editing and production programs.
