The Development & Operations Specialist is responsible for the accurate processing and management of contributions and commitments in support of The Nature Conservancy in New York and a variety of New York City Office operations activities.
The Development & Operations Specialist is primarily responsible for processing and recording gifts and will also serve as a key component in the front-end administration of the New York City Office. The Specialist analyzes each gift and supporting documentation to determine accurate processing and works within the constituent database to find missing information. They will process complex transactions such as stock gifts, matching gifts, in-kind contributions, commitments and commitment payments in an accurate and timely manner, while also processing adjustments to these as needed. They will maintain a physical and digital record of all payments, commitments, supporting documents and adjustments and apply established processes and practices to improve effectiveness. They will provide other team members with information needed to make decisions and solve problems. In the performance of administrative functions for the New York City Office, the Specialist will have substantial contact with team members, donors, legal and financial professionals, such as operations support, reception, greeting visitors, answering phones, procurement, meeting management, special events, training and other duties as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Does not supervise any team members, but may supervise volunteers, interns, or temporary team members.
- Duties are performed under general supervision and established guidelines.
- Financial responsibility may include working within a budget, purchasing, processing invoices, contracting with vendors and assisting with budget tracking.
- Experience generating reports and interpreting data.
- Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
- Ensure compliance with Conservancy policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements. Act independently on assigned tasks and exercise independent judgment based on analysis and experience, referring difficult questions and unusual problems to supervisor.
- Serve as a team member for assigned projects.
- Experience organizing time and managing diverse activities to meet deadlines.
- Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
- Work overtime as needed.

- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in fundraising principles & practices.
