Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, provides day-to-day support of aquatic classes, instructors and pool area to ensure aquatic staff members are providing high-quality,member-focused programs in a safety controlled environment. Promotes the YMCA as a cause driven organization.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Through staffing and scheduling of YMCA swim lesson program.
- Serves as a leader on the pool deck. Incorporates safe supervision practices while deck supervising, instructing and lifeguarding. Follows all safety guidelines
- Communicates effectively with program participants and answers questions as needed. Reports problems, complaints or concerns of program participants to the aquatic director in a timely fashion. Address parent concerns in a professional and positive manner
- Supervise and maintain aquatic programming and safety during designated shift.
- Assists staff, including lifeguards and swim instructors, locate and secure coverage upon absence. Provides coverage when necessary
- Provide swim lesson instruction under the guidelines of the Y Swim Lessons Program
- Assist with general pool maintenance
- Prepares for programming, organizes rosters, announces roll call, and takes attendance
- Guide new and seasoned swim instructors with constructive criticism and positive reinforcement. Promote teamwork and unity
- Assist in the evaluation of swim participants and the recordings of evaluations for registration purposes
- Assist in the administration and distribution of progress reports to Instructors and then to swim participants. Proofread all progress reports prior to releasing them to swim participants
- Assist with session planning through communication of current class participation, swimmer advancement & placement, etc.
- Ensure aquatic safety by enforcing sound teaching methods under Y Swim Lesson principles, maintenance of proper discipline and class control
- Assist in pool schedule design, helping to ensure that pool time is used to the fullest extent
- Obtain training in the Listen First program and implement it into everyday operations at the YMCA; serve as a mentor to staff in their implementation of the program.
- Conduct performance evaluations as requested by aquatics director.
- Assists with first aid concerns.
- Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings
- Accountable for understanding the organization’s charitable status and mission to assure access for all through active participation in fundraising and philanthropy efforts.
- All other duties as assigned by aquatics director.
Skills/Experience:
- One to two years related experience preferred, as a coordinator of aquatics.
- Minimum age requirement 21
- Swim Instructor certification or notable experience with the YMCA Swim Lesson Program
- Child Abuse Prevention Trainings, Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, AED , Oxygen Certification
- Ability to walk, sit or stand for long periods of time and to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency. Ability to lift a minimum of 30 pounds. Ability to perform activities which require sustained concentration and attention.
